a trial was carried out to stop pregnant mothers smoking

I suppose it's more socially acceptable than the ideal solution which would be charging pregnant mothers as well as parents who smoke in the home or in the car with child abuse

they used shopping vouchers as an incentive!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-31003254

because of course, quitting of your own accord for your unborn babies sake isn't reason enough

as a smoker myself, i think this is bizarre. what about the people who don't smoke...

it is probably more common in the chav class... some Lidl vouchers probably are a good incentive there

next they need to tackle fetal alcohol syndrome too

Dead unborn babies aren't incentive enough, so let's give them a handful of cash, that should sway them. Jesus.

People are more likely to do something if you reward them. Another fine bit of research money well spent.

So the fact that the baby has no choice means it's okay?

To be fair that is pretty much the argument in support of abortion...

To the subject at hand, it seems to have a positive effect so, regardless of the morality of it, maybe it is a good thing?

Yeah I really don't agree on that. There's got to be a point where control is taken away from you if you can't be responsible enough to have it.

The argument of abortion is similar but in that case it's finite there's no extra care needed afterwards for a potentially damaged human. It's completely sociopathic to bring a child into this world knowing that you're hurting its development before it's even born.

What is the logic of having tobacco smoking legalised, yet cannabis smoking is illegal.

Because cannabis makes you question stuff and "deep" think - which in turn makes people who would not normally question government choices / rules think more - which worries the establishment. It also makes you appreciate what you have, your world and how amazing things are (as well as being an extremely good painkiller without making pharma companies a pile of money..)

Whereas smoking just makes you stink like an ashtray ;) and doesn't really do anything mentally (apart from increase blood/ nicotine - which in turn temporarily increases acetycholine)

I don't even understand smoking. It doesn't do anything good for you: it makes you stink, rots your lungs, makes you become addicted to other substances, etc, etc.

It feels really nice, couldnt beat the head rush fromthe 1st smoke of the day. Maybe glue? I dunno.

Addicted to other substances?

It's a disgusting habit I wish I'd never started! Young and idiotic equals smoking is cool :(. Such a knob.

To be fair though I enjoy it and I don't know why that's why I'm finding it hard to quit although I know it's doing me nothing but harm I enjoy it...
