Im unsure whether to skip the Type9, im currently doing Luxuries in my 280cargo Python, i keep taking breaks to do a few missions to break the monotony and ive just hit 100mill in assets. Im 50/50 about swapping to a Type9+Cobra... or else sticking with the Python for the long grind to 200mill for an Anaconda.

I sold my Python for a Type 9.. it's like selling your soul. If you're already bored of the monotonous trading then it's a bad idea, I can't bring myself to log on anymore.

I traded my Python for a T9 and it was the worst move I made....Till I got on the Seeking luxuries route. Worth it now and will be getting a Anaconda in about an hour.

Just traded in my fully kitted out Asp for a type7 - just to do some SL grinding.... Making money fairly fast, but god is it dull! Thinking I will get a Cobra, rank up with the empire and go for a clipper next.

Loving the Freeagle at the moment, got it kitted out somewhat, taking out pirates and pretty much anything up to an Asp is doable. Challenging to say the least but great fun and pays enough to do what i want to do,
One day i might grind the trade routes, but not today, this is far more fun :D

And I am the proud owner of an Anaconda with some respectable but not great upgrades. Sweet ship and a nice pow as you hit the boost :D

You been hammering the Tenche route?

I was on it earlier and made about 25M in an hour and a half.... it's ridiculous to be honest..

Now at 253M in assets, I've had about enough to be honest, been grinding for the A7 shield gen, now I need a bigger reactor, I *wish* so much, there was something else to do in the game where you could make good money, because whilst i'm as guilty as anybody else at hammering these luxury traders - it's dull as absolute ****!

I can see there's a few people posting in the frontier forums, who have over a billion (nearly all of it trading profit) to be honest - I have no idea how they've managed it, because i've been trading "a lot" and i'm about done with it LOL...

As things stand I think I won't make it to a Python as I cba to grind luxuries or trading. I'll do combat and see how it goes. Got plenty of other games to play/finish.

I'm writing this as someone that really loves the *idea* of Elite: Dangerous.

BUT

There is an Elephant in the room.

WHY ?

Why are we grinding bigger ships ? Why are we doing this ?

I get my python, Why ?

Combat doesn't pay the bills, piracy, bounty hunting and mining are met with titchy profits compared to trading. So, I use it to grind my Anaconda.

The game needs aims and ambitions beyond "I want the next ship".

I love the idea of being able to help build an OcUK starport and get a cut of the profits. But that is all starting to sound like EVE (which I never played), if a bigger faction can just come along and vape us.

We need a clear picture of where this game is going.

It's your choice to play it that way. I know I certainly don't and have no intention of getting anything bigger than an Asp at the very most, I might just stick with my Cobra, hell, I was and would have been happy with my Sidewinder if it had just had a slightly bigger FSD range.

I just don't understand this need to get the biggest ship

I'm still pooddling around in my sidewinder, doing whatever takes my fancy of an evening. OK, the sidewinder is pretty much as kitted out as you can get, and I'll probably get a Cobra at some point this week to make a change, but I'm consciously not grinding away to get the next ship.

The game is an amazing amount of fun, and there are still moments when I look out of the cockpit window and think 'that is really cool'. It's not at all about the destination, it's about how you get there and having an immense amount of fun doing so.

I've just got myself a type 6 so i can make bigger profits so i can afford to upgrade my viper so i can go around hunting :P I hate trading, i just want to kill people :(

It's an amazing game, the detail and some of the things you see, you wouldnt get anywhere else

After a couple of days trying to get hold of the basics in the tutorial missions I finally decided to start the main game last night.

Picked a wine delivery mission that seemed easy enough and even managed to navigate myself to where I needed to be without (much) trouble.

Saw the station, requested docking and saw what I thought was the entrance, only it appears it wasn't and while trying to enter I bounced off what I imagine was a shield covering the opening.

Cue me frantically trying to back up and during the melee of pressing buttons on my pad I manage to not only deploy my weapons but actually fire a single round at the station.

It didn't end well as I'm sure you can guess! :p

So can you progress in the game (like make enough money to get a ship properly kitted out and a get at least a medium tier ship) by doing anything but trading?

I would like to get into a decent exploring ship and just head out into the wilderness, but sounds like it's still heavily biased towards Euro Truck Simulator in a type 9 still?

Best ship for exploration is the ASP Explorer, the hull costs 6M, once you fit it with the top rated FSD and D rated equipment, with no weapons it'll do about 37LY jumps, so it's perfect for exploration.

The problem with trading is that it makes about 20x more money than anything else, and if you want the bigger ships - you need a lot of money - not only to buy the damn thing, but also to run it, (fuel, repairs, insurance etc)

To put it into perspective, I'm a pretty decent pilot imo - in conflict zones I can make about 150-200k per hour at a conflict zone, or about 600k-800k an hour at a good nav beacon, to put this into perspective - in a trade ship on a luxuries route, I can make about 18M per hour, or 10M per hour on a standard trade route, obviously combat is more fun - but if I'm doing that constantly in a big ship like a Python or an Anaconda, I'm not making any real profit, I'm roughly breaking even.

which means that if you're like me, and you've been playing since Alpha, you've already done a heck of a lot of stuff, and so big ships are the next thing - hence it turns into space-truckers 2015.

Same, I've already done the ship grind, I played from Premium Beta until Gamma...I'm putting off playing again until there is a decent amount of content, at which point I'll snap up an Oculus and dive in.

Shame they haven't got round to delivering more content yet, especially regarding balancing. Hey ho....I am patient :)
