970 x2 RMA now what?

Anybody got 2 x 8gb 290X? If so what are the temps like

One card 65-75c under load, two cards upto 85c underload. 3/4 cards will need fans at 100% and good ventilation to stay sub 90c ideally.

On this design, three cards is the maximum we recommend and the cards should have spacing between them.

So doesn't look too bad

I just dont know what to do lol 290 8 gb does make sense but the heat from crossfire would be terrible.

I ran 290X Crossfire (Tri-X) it was like I was stood at the edge of mount doom. Or in the Sahara desert. If you go dual get them under water, then you get the performance, the vram and good temps.

Not a fan of dual cards personally . Single 290X 8GB is very nice @ 1440P, and best option for me atm. Looking forward to seeing the 390X, as I always want the best single card performance I can get. The 'other' company is dead to me now :p, so let's hope AMD bring the performance !

290X or 295X2? I'm reading reviews and the 295X2 seems a damn fine card that is on a par with a 290X Crossfire setup, nevermind a single card! At £100 more than the MSI 8GB, it seems like a great deal. I like the idea of x2 290X cards, but I don't think my case will like it very much, being an H440. I'm also aware the 8GB could come in useful, but I'm expecting the next gen of cards to offer that anyway.

I have a pair of 290s in an h440. Reference cards and they worked fine, but a bit noisy so I put a pair of HG10s on them.

You can get a 295X2 for £400 that's a great deal !

Yeah the 295X2 would run cooler and quieter than two air cooled 290X's.

The internet is rubbish sometimes. Every search you do on 970 SLI comes up saying they're amazing and you must get them, better than anything else for value and performance. Funny how much can change in the space of a week!

Sorry, my mistake, it's £200 more at £500. I got my brain wires crossed and was thinking it the wrong way round. x2 of the MSI 8GB would cost £600, with the 295X2 £100 less and offering equaling performance... unless you needed more than 4GB VRAM of course.

the temps of the 290x crossfire are nothing compared to the 7990 Dual....

85 degrees to 98 degrees, coming out the side like a blast from a heat gun, i actually burnt my fingers on the backplate :D

the 295X2 would be the best value for money at 4K

Keep in mind you need a good power supply even for a single 295X2, 850W+, 1000W is ideal. Single rail preferably, as it needs 28A per PCI-E cable.

unless you've had them you dont know how good they are, i dont believe most of that stuff on that thread, i think it's the games that are at fault

my last really good card was the 7970, the GTX 970 is flipping miles better, the card is that good, it's actually boring to own.

dont work in SLI ?.......mine do, but they didn't before and the ``didn't before bit`` is what that lot over on that thread are ignoring...........Setter knows, because he's the one that fixed my stuttering issue a month ago !

but FC4 is different, that game cant be fixed

the 970 only has one fault...........4GB is about to be not enough RAM, this will be a real issue close to Xmas, long after the 380X is out.

Sli 970's are amazing price to performance that has not changed.

The problem is that it turned out that they use 3.5gb of the total 4gb of ram (much like the old scenario people faced with windows 32bit) and that is annoying because not only were they advertised as being 4gb it also means that @ 4k you may see performance loss however that being said @1400p you should not be having a fps problem.

If i were you i would get a 980 even in games @4k with the 290x 8gb the 980 beats it (in some games by a very big margin) and in games were the extra ram is no use you really start to see a big gap.

So a 970 is a no buy? I have 2 x 680 and thinking of upgrading to a single card. Not sure what to get...

I reckon i could get £250 back for both my cards with the waterblocks on. That leaves me with aboiuot £300 to spend on a new card. Any suggestions?

sorry for jacking this thread!

A couple of 980's would cost me my soul. I dont think i could purchase even oneo with my £300 budget lol :(
