Moving to Haswell......

So current rig is in my signature with the 860 @3.6-3.8Ghz

I am wanting to go haswell and have someone to buy my current board from me for a good price

I am considering jumping to 1150 with a G3258K chip and a good capable board as a start on this platform and then picking up a 4690k or the like in 6-8 months when funds allow

Been looking around and the G chip looks amazing! seems to outperform the 860 at most things that dont use the bonus cores.

System will be for 95% gaming...so is it worth it and a good move?.... and if so is there a good sub £100 crossfire 8x8x board I can pair with it to get it up to 4.5/4.7Ghz?

I saw I think it was an MSI PC Mate Z97 board, cant seem to find information on the PCI-e performance though, but for £64.99 is it VERY tempting

I think the lowest priced SLI ready motherboard is the Z97X SLI, whixhvwas around £80-£90 last time I looked.

The difference between being SLI ready and XFIRE ready is the PCI x numbers.

A XFIRE board needs a x16/x4 at least where as SLI needs at least a x16/x8 (running at x8/x8). Bar SLI not working at 16/4 the difference overall is only a few %..

Z97 and the pentium K is a great idea on a budget.
 
I would get the z97x. its a banging board, but running a pentium dual core, even overclocked next to xfire 7950s will be a bottle neck.

Do this for a while, but I wouldnt go haswell... save up and wait for the skylake cpus to come out later in the year.

Really likes and recommends the Z97X
 
So...looks like its all systems go.

Picked up a z87 gd45 gaming board from Moogleys on the MM and I have grabbed a G3258 cheap through work, so currently a £90 chip / mobo upgrade to go in my new H440 case :)

Seemed to make sense to only build it once l

Now once my wife's 30th is all paid for I will start saving for a K i5 or i7 chip. I am sure the AE chip will do for a bit though
 
Does that board have a bios that supports the G3258 already flashed to it? It's just that MSI boards are very prone to being bricked when updating the bios and if it has a old bios it will need flashing before it will take the G3258.
 
Unless the previous owner flashed it. When the Devils canyon and G3258 where released. MSI were much slower to release a bios to supprt theese chips compared to asus/gigabyte on Z87.
 
I've done the exact same as you've planned.

I went from a i3-3220 @ 3.2Ghz on a Gigabyte B75 board, to a Z97X-SLI with the G3258 (will be buying the i5-4690K when funds allow)

Have only had it a few days and already impressed with it, have the 3258 clocked at 3.8Ghz on stock cooler, with temps on load of 58degrees
 
Ok build is under way :)

Just by looking at the BIOS with a raised eyebrow the chip is now sat at 4.2GHz at 1.25 volts which is nice. Its just a shell at the moment until I get the time to move all my old cooler, gfx, psu etc into the new case.....build thread to follow :)
