**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Looking for some advice chaps.

I've run Pilot Sport PS2s and Pilot Super Sports for the last 3 years on a rwd car. The PS2s were the original manufacturer spec. I've now got a 4wd car and the original manufacturer spec appears to be either Dunlop SP Sport MAXX GT or Conti Sport Contact 3s (on the car currently) both with the RO1 approval.

I've no experience of Dunlops and the CSC3s are old tyres so I don't want to buy these. I would have looked at Goodyears but they don't appear to offer a fitment for 265/30/ ZR20.

I can get Michelin Super Sports (non RO1) for £202 but the Dunlops are much cheaper at £169 and are RO1 approved. Are the Dunlops worth considering, or should I just go for the Super Sports?

I can't decide whether I care about the RO1 approval but wet weather performance and quietness are priorities.

Thoughts?

what text is written on the side of efficient grip performance tyres? Just bought some EGP and noticed today that the tyres on say 'efficient grip' on them. Is this the correct tyre?

e: nm, have double checked and 'performance' is just pretty small underneath 'grip'

I have Yokohama V105 and I think they are excellent, especially in the rain. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair. From the falkens I had before they've increased grip massively. On the noise front they're about as noisy as my old tyres but my car isn't great for noise insulation anyway. Haven't had them long so I can't say much for how they wear.

Want to put four new tyres on my Mazda3 Sport in the next couple of weeks. It's been on the same mixed crap since I bought it about a year ago and I've had enough, especially as I'll be doing a 60 mile round trip each day when I start my new job soon.

Seemingly the car takes 205/50 R17 93W. From reading various threads before I know the Continental Conti Sport Contact 5 is a popular one, and I can get those in my size but it says they're 'XL' rated with a higher load index, is that okay? It's only a hatchback, seems odd it'd need reinforced tyres.

Any others worth looking at? I'll probably be doing it through Asda Tyres as I can get a 10% discount so about £100 per corner on the Contis above.

Got 4 new Conti SportContact5s being fitted at work tomorrow courtesy of Event Tyres - they're a fair bit cheaper than eTyres - they're equal to or cheaper than most local fitters in fact, and less in this instance 'cos I found a discount code. They also appear to get better reviews than eTyres who I have used without problems in the past. Nice and convenient.

XL is fine. In fact, in 99.99% of cases the load rating and speed rating can be ignored. They are all built to be way beyond the car they are likely to be fitted to.

ie the minimum speed rating available for any Tyre you are looking to fit your car will probably be "H" which I believe is like 130mph. Now, your car and the other cars that feature that wheel size will probably not be even capable of 130mph, hence irrelevant. Same thing with the speed rating.

Also, how did you get 10% off at Asda Tyres?

Any choice of note for a Cooper S riding on 17" standard wheels?

In the same situation, probably going for 4 CS5's or F1A2's.

I really like the F1A2 but the constant awful droning I'm getting from mine continues to wind me up. It's even more annoying because the rest of the tyres performance is, as expected, absolutely exceptional.

I'm still angry enough with Goodyears blatant attempt to fob me off about it that I might pick the CS5's just to make me feel better.

I would hear a slight droning on AS2s but only on certain roads. I just discounted it as that road surface as everywhere else it was stellar. That was on 17" 225 and 245 section tyres.

Cool thanks, was sort of what I thought but wanted to check.

Get a discount because I work for Asda, only for a few more weeks though so might as well get it done a bit cheaper now while I can. £455.96 fitted before discount. :(

Yup. On about 50% of road surfaces.

Funny you should say this actually as I just fitted Eagle F1A2's to my car as well and I have noticed an increase in droning on some surfaces (compared with Michelin PS3's which I had on before)

Your good lady upgraded to the S? Last time we spoke she was in a Cooper on smaller wheels and proffered them to the bigger ones.

Explain this droning? I love F1A2's and want her on them.

She has a Cooper but it has factory 17's - the 15's are the winter wheels. One of the 17 inch RFT's has a puncture so I'm mulling the options. It currently drives massively better on it's 15's than it does on the 17's.

There is just a constant annoying droning noise I can hear over and above the radio on about 50% of road surfaces. No other tyre on the car do this (I've tried 3 other sets of wheels!).

The weird thing is I've got F1A2's on the E39 too where they are absolutely great with no annoying noise at all.

Got 4 Efficientgrip Performance fitted on my Astra today. Driving home 90 or so miles tomorrow so should be a pleasant journey.

looks like I need a new tyre
going to order some new tyres (pair) what's recommend these days for a mid-range all season tyre?
going on a focus, think its 205/45/16

Thanks

Just driven back as well. Very quiet and smooth. Very happy!

Now just need to avoid the maze of potholes that cover the roads in Birmingham and these should do for a while! :D
