HSBC scandal.

Go steal something from a shop, when caught say you will pay back 10% what it's worth for a no prosecution deal, watch the police laugh at you!

The rich people guilty of this get let off, cos no doubt they have fingers in political pies!

it will be the same people paying £15,000 for a table with the tories

they have to much influence on the government imo, political parties pretty much just sell them selves to the highest bidders

Tax avoidance should have the same stigma as benefit fraud.

Are you deliberately confusing avoidance and evasion? At best avoidance should have the same stigma as claiming benefits you are entitled to but don't need. Evasion is comparable to benefit fraud.

Things should turn interesting if they decide to filter out as many tax evaders as possible and look into each one's financial history. :D

Not at all. Everyone has a tax burden, only some people can afford to play the system to avoid it. The system is rotten to the core.

This topic is about the illegal evasion of paying for that burden, not avoiding paying by lightening the burden.

Not so much a scandal really, somewhat expected and slightly confused as to why it's taken this long to catch on to what they've been doing.

But as a service to customers, you can't fault HSBC, I certainly wouldn't have complained if they were helping me not pay tax.

As Dolph correctly said this isn't about gaming the system looking for loopholes this is about outright deliberate deceit and HSBC not only being complicit in that but advising to do that.

Any professionally trained person should shoulder the responsibility and be held accountable for practices that are ongoing that are legally wrong. If practices are legally acceptable but morally and ethically wrong then they should be held to the same burden to identify where things need to change. T

And in amongst this the banks have leveraged removal of what little safety guards there were after the collapse (by strong-arming Obama) and this fact has been given scant attention in the news.

Not in the slightest, amoral behaviour from the banks is nothing new.

Well he was defeated by an army heavily funded by a rather prominent banking family, he's bound to be a bit bitter about the situation.

Things were a bit different back then, the Rothschilds had a better intelligence network than most governments and got news of Wellington's victory at Waterloo a day early... leading to some dubious trading on the stock market.

I'm strongly in favour of increasing the base pay and introducing large bonuses to HMRC staff to attract certain people, we lose so much revenue to evasion that it would be well worth it to pay out large bonuses to poach people from the other side - make the job attractive and well compensated and start poaching private bankers/tax consultants with % deals on the extra revenue/fines they can bring in by cracking down on schemes they know about. Should also offer payments to whistle blowers/IT staff as the German intelligence service has done in the past(seven figure payout to an IT guy who leaked a list of accounts - they and other European govts in turn will have got significant extra revenue from the information provided).

I am not disagreeing with you Dowie at all but I do find it interesting how people are willing to make cases for increasing pay and bonuses for making money or finding ways of saving money and when it comes to educating the future generations or finding the money for people who care for our immediate families when they are ill people suddenly want to pinch pennies. People are by their nature selfish people and deserve what they get tbh.
