Free Firewalls

Why not? Does the same job as any other. Just allow or block connections.
Interested on hearing the reason as well.

Why? No problems at all. You do realise your router has a built in firewall as well for the outside?
Windows firewall. Perfectly good firewall. No need for anything else.

I used to use Comodo, it is a good firewall and comes with loads of features.

Unless you want some major control over what is allowed access to the outside, you don't need any sort of software firewall now days. Your router will already be NAT enabled and will be a better firewall than any software on your network side.

I use Comodo as I like to have control over outgoing connections (trojans, gotta love 'em) but unless you're particularly looking for complete control over outgoing traffic then you really don't need one as routers have them built in. Once upon a time when I had a USB modem the PC had to have a firewall installed as there was no other but these days its all handled by the router.
i learned that the hard way back on windows2000. it was wrecked within minutes of going online.
even the firewall built into XP was good enough - one slight problem was that MS disabled it by default which allowed worms to spread like wildfire.
