Hi,

Had to move my whole PC set up into the front room, Now the dragon is moaning like hell she cant hear *******ers and Corry on the telly due to video card racket when i have new games on and the fans kick in, I cant hear it due to awesome headphones :)

Does anyone know a decent card that's not as loud as an airliner taking off when you load AC Unity or Mordor or the like? Is there such a thing?

Don't really think i can afford a water cooled jobby..

any ideas

thanks

What card have you got now? What case? Maybe an aftermarket cooler or a quieter fan profile would help.

Buy her some headphones for the telly. :D

1. Cap the frame rate to not go over the refresh rate of the display
2. Work on the fan speed profile
3. If neccessary, change to a differen cooler as suggested above.

...but what card are you using anyway?

Depending on the game, v-sync can cause mouse lag (maybe just in older games?) but you can limit the fos in Radeon Pro!

If it is a reference 290/290X, then simply set the maximum fan speed lower until you find the point the other half doesn't moan. Once the card hits max temperature and this fan speed, it will lower it's clocks to keep to this level - lower performance, I realise, but it's the cheapest option.

Otherwise, I'd be looking at an Accelero Xtreme IV, Accelero Hybrid II, Kraken G10 + AIO, or Corsair HG10 + AIO. I had an Xtreme on my 7970, and currently have two Hybrid's on my 290's and am amazed how quiet they are, even at 100% fan speed. Haven't tried the Kraken or Corsair, but they should work as well as the Hybrid, just with more customisability/parts to buy.

I'd be getting an Accelero Xtreme in your position, provided it's compatible with your card and you have space in your PC for it. Probably cheaper than selling your current card (whatever it is) and switching to a quieter one unless you downgrade at the same time.

It sounds like the biggest is a whining noise not coming from the PC....
...but you do have headphones! :)

If your GFX card developed a whining noise you would look to replace it...... just saying ;)

haha thanks for the replies,

I even paid virgin media extra money to put another box in the bedroom so she can watch telly in there... still moaning..

anyway my mate told me overclockers will let you send your 970 back if you are not happy with it? is that still the case?

cheers

There is an issue with the 970 4gb Vram being 3.5gb + 0.5gb which causes stuttering if you use over 3.5gb of Vram. You have until the end of Feb to return it to Overclockers for a refund, providing it was purchased from there obviously.
However the 970 is meant to be one of the quieter cards

Depends on what cooler the GPU is using..

INNO3D gtx 970 the first one - so loud

What's you budget, current card and monitor resolution.
refund money from the above £270 i think maybe a bit more x 1080 - 290x? not buying another nvidia card, always been AMD the 970 swung it to get on release - massive dissapointment tbh

buy the mrs headphones for the tv
no go i'm afraid i have already tried that and had virgin media installed in the bedroom..

Only till the end of Feb...so you got less than a week to request for rma and send it back now. You can send the 970 back to OcUK (assuming you bought it from them that is) for a refund no questions asked. If reason required, just say the card isn't real or proper 4GB memory as you were expecting it to be.

Funny that everyone (myself included) were assuming it is a (reference) 290/290x because of being loud, yet it turned out to be a 970...

I'm pretty sure in th drivers you can set a maximum speed for the fan which will help. Find a maximum speed that doesn't annoy your dragon and save the profile. Of course the card will run hotter and won't boost as much but that's the price you pay for quiet computing.

A 970 can be loud, its not the chip that looks dnits the cooler the board partner decides to use. Cards like the 970 aren't subject to as many restrictions as the top end 980 which means some companies will go cheap on the cooler so they can price thier card at the value end of the spectrum (HIS done this with AMD card). At the end of the day youget what you pay for (vram issue aside).
