One of our cats came back covered in ticks

Last year during the summer one of our cats came back with 30+ ticks after missing for a few days. These ticks were purple-silver coloured about a small pea sized and believed to be sheep ticks. Fastforward to today and one of our neighbours had an argument with one of the other neighbours who threatened 'your cats will go missing' it was nothing to do with us but she came to tell us of the threat made because we have a few cats too. Now I got to thinking about the ticks incident - we live in a urban area with no sheep for miles and its a long way for a moggy to even get somewhere resembling a 'rural setting'. Does anyone have experience with there pets getting ticks? It was a one off event - none of the other cats ever had them and I'm thinking that our cat was taken and dumped somewhere but somehow returned. Are these sort of ticks wide spread and this could have happend by chance??? I have never heard of this before.

Regards
Scotty

I know nothing of ticks really, but if you're suggesting that the neighbour is putting ticks onto your cat then it's worth considering how someone gets a load of ticks to put on there.

I suppose if they have a poor animal, they might have ticks from them...

It's unlikely that your neighbour is harbouring ticks. Ticks are commonly found in long grass and bushes so it's likely that your cat picked them up from these whilst missing.

Ticks generally live in long grass, any areas nearby?

Also cats are protected by law, including the capture of someone's cat and relocating it. Worth a mention of the threat to police.

Cats can cover a lot of ground surprisingly quickly.

Many years ago, my parents cat managed an "Incredible journey" of over fifty miles back home in less than a week after hitching a lift in a removal van. How she knew how to find her way home I really don't know!

The scenario I would be considering is one where the Cat is taken out to the country and abandoned whereupon she catches the ticks and then makes her way home.

I think he may have been taken to an area where the ticks are - not someone infecting him with them. The reason for this was that the threat was 'your cats will go missing'.
If someone has had a tick problem I would like to hear about it.

As said ticks will live in patches of long grass, not just in the country.

Definitely get the police involved if suspecting someone is relocating cats or threatening to.

Yeah, pretty sure the first few replies didn't bother to read the message properly. It was fairly obvious you didn't think that your neighbour was putting ticks on your cat HAHA

There is long grass in some areas but at least a 1/2 mile away. ~I know they can cover this distance easily but none of our cats have had them except him on this single occasion. Given that he is male is a factor but he would have only been 7-8 months old and I doubt he was chasing a female cat as he has only just realise his 'desires' in the last couple of months.
I'm thinking if they are sheep ticks then sheep would be in the area and there arn't any around here for many miles, unless of course sheep ticks pop up without sheep presence.

You don't need sheep to get sheep ticks. The family cats used to get them from areas with no ticks. Your flea treatment should keep them mostly at bay.

1st thing is remove the ticks that are present. Then start using Frontline or Advantage

Forget front line, might as well use water.

We use StrongHold as it's a wormer too and the vet suggested that the fleas are getting resistant to some of the others like Frontline (we always used that for years).

Well it was obviously doing something right or it'd have come back covered in crosses.

But in all seriousness, if you think they are doing something they shouldn't be with cats, report it.

all i can add to this thread is my mate once ate a tick off his dogs back

was pretty disgusting like

Did it taste good? :D

(Humans do have stomach enzymes specific to the digestion of insect tissue, therefore we must have instincts that might find such food yummy! :D )
