Thanks for the explanation - do all of the programs/OS's you mentioned have the ability to stream from a PC then or only OpenELEC + Kodi?

Both OSMC and OpenELEC are Kodi based, so best suited as media centers, including streaming as you describe.

I prefer OSMC, however it is in alpha at the moment, but it's so easy to format the SD card and try both.

Use SD Formatter to get the full 64GB back, as the builds will partition out the SD card.

Does OSMC run on top of raspbian like RaspBMC? I liked the fact I could tinker in the background with RaspBMC via SSH, but OpenELEC is locked down tight.

Got a Pi2 monday and hugely impressed so far.

No menu stutter at all even when holding the down button on the remote and scrolling through my collection of 400+ films. Its also played the couple of uncompressed Blu-Ray rips with DTS-HD audio I've tried so far without problems

No problem, yes if you export your media correctly from your PC (Samba/SMB if it's Windows, NFS if it's Linux/OSX) you should be able to add it as a source in anything running Kodi...

Yeah you can play around with OSMC, one of the reasons why I prefer it over OpenELEC. But OSMC also has a much nicer GUI.

I haven't tried raspbmc or OSMC for probably over a year, as I had a funny problem at some stage which prompted me to try OpenELEC and I preferred it at the time...

However I think as soon as my microSD card reader arrives (don't forget to buy one of these!!!) I am probably going to give OSMC another chance (and probably fork it so I can try and see about extending it)

OpenELEC was snappier on the original Pi model B compared to raspbmc but I've got no gripes with OSMC on the Pi2 at all.

OSMC is just so much more useful as its a proper Debian system under the hood, I'm just a bit annoyed that my HumblePi doesn't fit the Pi2 as the extra USB ports foul the pcb

Think I'll try osmc tomorrow then once the SD card arrives, then if I don't like it will go for openelec :)

While we're on the subject I'm super impressed still that even without overclocking my Pi2 can happily run OpenELEC with the Aeon Nox skin (a total no-no with the original Pi) and it looks great :)

Just got my Pi 2 but having a problem :(

When I plug the power in, the red and green led stays solid and nothing shows on the screen.

I have tried different USB cables and adapters as well as actual plugs. Different SD cards also.
Any ideas?

What distro are you trying to run from your SD card?

Sorry, I meant I tried it on a USB. I tried OSMC/RaspBMC on a micro-sd card.

I have tried my Huawei phone charger which is 5v 2a and a Sony Z3 charger which is 5v 1500ma. I don't have one of the "official" PSU's that many of the companies sell.

IR installed now :)
