Increased surveillance in Britain, along with the reduction of access to justice, have contributed to one of the worst assaults on human rights in Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall, according to a damning assessment by Amnesty International.

In its annual State of the World’s Human Rights report published today, Amnesty says the Coalition had rushed through legislation such as anti-terror measures and invasive surveillance powers without adequate time for parliamentary debate.

Is anybody here actually surprised? if so what rock have you been living under? :p

The scary thing for me is what the Tory government will do once they've wormed their way out of the European Court of Human Rights, absolutely terrifying after seeing how they've treated the disabled, poor and generally most vulnerable people in society during this past term.

really? countries performing beheading and mutilation as punishment are less against human rights than the uk? really?

Why is it every organization like amnesty rapidly ends up a joke.

The quote above from amnesty specifically mentions the worst in Europe, not the world.

'Reduction of access to justice' - presumably they are talking about legal aid?

So not paying somebodies legal bills is an 'assault of human rights'?

in its

State of the World’s Human Rights report

and apparently we should have had a few more wars to make the world better

The global report also condemns world leaders for failing to intervene in conflicts such as Syria, Gaza and Ukraine, in what it calls a “catastrophic year” for millions of people caught up in violence.

Amnesty called on the UN Security Council to renounce its veto power – wielded solely by the five permanent members, Britain, China, France, Russia and the US – to make it easier for peacekeeping forces to be deployed to prevent genocide or mass atrocities.

The right to a fair trial? it's hardly fair if one side is lawyered up and the other can't afford one.

it's why you get "just plead guilty for the lesser sentence" and people getting tricked into confessions

Free lawyers is a 'human right'? Really?

Access to legal council, given the requirement of professional knowledge in judicial representation, certainly is tied in with the human right of access to justice. And lawyers charge fees commensurate with their professional standing. Take away access to free legal council, and you take away access to justice for many people.

How can you contemplate otherwise?

I don't recall the FALL of the Berlin Wall being an assault on human rights, well played Amnesty.
I loved the picture the other day with the 5 things in the world you can be executed for committing a crime, specifically all the SE Asia countries and their death to drug traffickers laws. Good.
Glad they stick to them.

Because as a taxpayer I can't afford to pay for my own legal representation and in my taxes afford to ay for those who don't pay taxes also? Where is my right to not have my own money taken from me and wasted on criminals? Three strikes and you're soyulent green anyone? Cost saving would be immense, and think of all the protein, more protein than Mo Farrah could shake a quorn mince curry at.

I think they used the falling of the wall as a watershed, rather than an example
