nVidia announce the Titan X at GDC 2015

With 780 sli my average fps in bf4 is around 120, ultra settings, x4 msaa at 1920x1200. It can dip down to 60 though depending on the server, lag can have a pretty severe impact in fps in this game.

is that a more fair comparison tho?

The most likely specs for the Titan X will be the same as the 980s but x1.5 so

Cores 3072
ROPs 96
Bus 384bit

And so on

Where the Titan is very different is in the 12gb of VRAM instead of 4gb.

If you work on the basis that a stock Titan X will have slightly lower clocks than a stock 980 it is not hard to have an educated guess at the likely performance if you already know what a 980 is capable of.

For example a good overclocked 980 can score around 2000 points @1080p on the Heaven 4 bench so I would expect a Titan running slightly lower max clocks to score

980 = 2000 x 1.5 = 3000 - about 200 (lower Titan X clocks) = 2800 points.

If the 390X has 8gb HBM X will mark the spot of Titan's grave. :)

Unlikely to 8gb for 1st gen HBM.

But I can play your game too

If the core on the 390X is only 20% to 25% faster than a 290X the Titan X will bury it. But that is speculating as we know nothing for sure about the 390X core.:)

so you are thinking 40% faster when both overclocked even at 1080p? (non cpu limited)
hmhm

If it does have 8gb HBM will you buy it Kapp or will you still buy the Titan X's due to having 12gb? Maybe you will buy 4 of each.

Not sure what res your playing at, but I have one 980 (overclocked high on water) and get 100-130fps+ easy on ultra 2xAA.

Unless your at some crazy res (4k) there's something awfully wrong with your setup.

Looking forward to seeing the results of this card, I'm tempted if the price is right.

I play with ultra mssax4 mesh medium in 1440 p. My cards are ocd to 1490 and the top card hits 79 degrees atm so when summer hits I will more then likely have to lower the oc.

I would prefer them with 4gb as I will be using them a lot for benching but yes I have every intention of getting the 390X providing it does not have an AIO cooler on it.

Very similar temps to what I get, though I tend to cap fps to keep temps down now as 780 sli is overkill for my res.

390X will have 4GB at launch, however there is no cemented implausibility why adding additional stacks isn't possible (maybe via an interleaving of pairs or similar) It depends on the GPU design more than anything. I fail to see why AMD would sell the card so short on memory for the long haul when it's something they've never done previously. Alternatively they may release a GDDR5 model too.

Fair enough. I would prefer the 390X to have 8gb. If not I will wait until it does.

Something can't be right with your setup. I'm getting better performance with one card albeit with 2xAA (1440p does not need any higher) everything ultra.

Unless your cards are seriously throttling with temps (my max temps are 46c) or your SLI is not engaged or something.

2x980's should give you way more fps than your quoting.

I will find it strange if the 390x only has 4GB HBM memory too.

There are known reasons why it's not seen plausible but there's been no credible source yet. Because of how HBM operates, the interposer that connects the GPU to the memory packages needs to be fairly huge. Each HBM 1.0 stack is limited to 1GB, and we're being lead to believe with what we know that the technology is limited to 4 memory stacks in this configuration. There is no documentation at present that says with any real certainty that HBM is specifically limited to 4 stacks. Representatives have made comments theorising that it's potentially not plausible given the space available that more stacks simply wouldn't fit on the package.

The Hynix documentation shows a configuration of four stacks on a single interposer. That's all it is, a diagram. I don't think this in itself is showing you that this is the 'be all end all'.
