nVidia announce the Titan X at GDC 2015

Ok folks a little advice please.

I game at 1440p, I currently have a 980 and play games like BF4, Elite Dangerous and will be getting The Witcher 3.
I want to max out games at my resolution so what would be the best option for me, getting another 980 to go SLI or a single Titan X?

Wait till the Witcher 3 is released and then decide. Surely the 980 copes with everything at 1440P more or less already?

You want specs from a stack of boxes? The picture isn't that good.

Now don't be silly, you know what I meant ;) Good site btw and I enjoy TPU's write ups and reviews :)

They have made quite an effort to specifically design and distribute sexy black boxes for the Titan X. A big difference to the plain cardboard boxes Linus and co got for the original Titan. Methinks this might be the retail packaging or they are just taking the immense marketing to an even higher level.

If they can put 4GB on a 960 and 8GB on the 980m they can definitely put 8GB on a 980.

Good shout

You may find that using the full 8gb on 980s in SLI could be slower than using 8gb on a single Titan X as the wider bus would help a lot in moving that much data around.

But we don't know that it can't handle it well.

We can sit here really day and guess.

The price has been leaked at US$999; adjust for VAT and you get a price point of £799. That's steep but tempting.

The question will be, do I pounce, or wait for AMD's riposte? It seems that the new AMD cards will be 4 GB only, which isn't enough, but we don't know for sure.

I've just added a second 980 and have been thoroughly impressed with performance in all the games I've tried. Most have worked out of the box, the exceptions are Watch Dogs which requires a dll from a previous patch for SLI to work, and Wolfenstein TNO which is not SLI capable at all but is not that demanding.

I'd say it comes down to whether you'd like a 30-40% increase in frame rates in all games with minimal hassle, or you can have 80-100% performance increase in most games which may require some tinkering. I thought the latter would be more cost effective for me, but if I didn't already own a 980 I am not so sure which way I'd have gone.

Coming from the man who owns approximately 50% of all Titans :p. You'd be surprised. I can get any game to run reasonably well at 1440p, but given I like a smooth 60Hz with vsync - or close to that with triple buffering - there can be a large trade off in which settings you need to lower. AC4 was particularly surprising, only at medium-ish settings would it maintain 45+ FPS when in towns. At 1080p there were no such problems though.

That's probably more due to poor game optimization than your system itself. You could chuck 4 cards at it and still be no better.

Nvidia want you to buy Titan X and not the 980, so the 980 will never have 8GB or you'll buy the cheaper card instead.................Gibbo said this months ago

Add the cost of importing and of course the retailers profit. It's going to be £900+ i reckon.

Well if that leaked price is indeed accurate, that is the same price as the original Titan. It will be a little higher than what the UK paid before because of the dollar to the pound but should be under £900.

The value of the pound has dropped significantly against the dollar in the last year so it will most likely be more expensive. IIRC the original titan was around £850 so wouldn't be surprised if the Titan X is closer to £1K mark. You also have to factor rip off Britain and current rumors that AMD will initially be arriving with the lower range card as part of their 300 series.

What we really need is a monster 390X to force nvidia's hand for the more affordable card but I can't see it happening ;)
