"What if" we all woke up tomorrow at war with Russia

Russia would lose, even if China chipped in.

If China allied with Russia in such a war, then I'm not so sure they would lose. To be honest, everyone would be a loser at the end of it as the world would be financially devastated.

Plus, as you said, a nuclear weapon would be used eventually which would just escalate things to disaster level. If Russia was on its knees near the end of a war for example then they may very well just unleash their nuclear arsenal, just 3 of their thermonuclear warheads (or 3 H-Bombs dropped from bombers) hitting along the western coast of the UK would devastate our entire country; mostly from the ensuing fallout.

Neither side could afford to lose a conventional war so one side or the other will use nukes, nuking Russia would be seen by any country that gets its water, food, fuel or weather from Russia as an act of war, except of course by the servile Europeans.

A successful first strike on Russia would be ecologically and economically devastating for europe and pretty much the rest of Eurasia and ultimately the Americas, billions of us would die to save the face of some reckless leaders.

I hope nobody votes Loony Green or we will have to beat them back with windmills and celery sticks.

One day I can see China pushing America too far, Russia and China then premptively take over Europe to isolate the USA.
Stalemate.

Russia is in a mess and Putin's current military antics are just an attempt to convince the natives, and us that "Russia stronk". It's a bit like North Korea's desperate attempts to get attention from the US, except being Russia it's less comical.

I very much doubt the West would risk World War 3 for the Ukraine, but things would get very tense after that. If however Putin went full retard and started messing around in the Baltic States, then things might get more unpleasant. Hopefully the Russian populace would wake up and overthrow the government before that point was reached.

If not any substantial fighting between NATO forces and the Russians would be the single most dangerous moment in human history. Even more so than Cuba in '62. It wouldn't take much for it to get completely out of control... :(

We could probably just let america deal with it, they seem overly prepared and overly willing to use their war toys. If we have any enemies we could probably just manipulate america in to invading them by claiming that they house terrorists or wmd. Outsource the war to the US.

Lets try to keep to serious answers please ladies and gents!

Hypothetical situation that I dearly hope never happens. But realistically it "could".

Putin makes a move that we can no longer ignore - perhaps grabs all of the Ukraine, maybe does an over night grab of Georgia - and we (the British) along with the US, France and Germany have no choice other than to respond.

Nuclear weapons are of course aimed at each other but nothing launched (yet).

Two questions: What are peoples thoughts on how this plays out? What is your personal reaction?

Putin grabs Ukraine - let him have it.

We are a tiny island off the coast of France.

The British Empire days are long gone.

Just think of the adrenaline rush you'd get at the minute warning. Awesome :D

But seriously its not going to happen. The conflict would be through economic means if it can to that. Russia holding oil & gas and the rest of the world blockading imports.

Must watch Threads again :D

It would most likely be a proxy war. How else would we possibly right a war? It would be almost impossible for Russia to launch a land invasion.

Do you think any sane country who 'gets its water, food, fuel or weather' from Russia is going to declare war on a country that just nuked Russia? That would be daring in the extreme!

I think you exaggerate the ecological impact of nuclear war. Recent studies have shown that in the event of a nuclear war between Russia and the US the global impact would be limited. There certainly wouldn't be any 'nuclear winter'.

Worse, study's show that the effects of a nuclear winter would be felt globally, in addition to the chaos effecting what would be left of the northern hemisphere, the loss of all crops and the financial damage would mean all aid to south America and Africa ends, so hundreds of millions would simply starve, and the chaos from that would see Africa dissolve into anarchy.
