Brand new car - respray for minor chip or not

Last edited:
My experience is the paint job on brand new cars, whilst consistent, is (generally speaking), consistently rubbish. Orange peel all over. Any good body shop will do better.

Take the warranty.
Take the respray.
Be happy.

I have read nothing a bodyshop can do, no matter how good will be as good as the factory paint job.

You have read incorrectly, factory jobs are often average at best unless it's a Bentley. Also your car probably has been resprayed and repaired during the final finish production process anyway.

Take the repair and warranty extension. If they do it until you are happy and guarantee the repair what have you got to lose? It will have dinks in the doors etc soon anyway.

Get it repaired. What else are you going to do, ask for another car? If you did that the dealer would probably just swap the bonnet from an identical new Fiesta and sell the chipped repaired one to somebody who isn't bonkers :p

Come to think of it, ask for that.

Why do you assume I want a new car?

This thread is just about deciding whether to have the repair done (ie to have a respray on a brand new car), or just leave the chip as it is.

I of course don't expect a new car because of a tiny chip!

Well as I dreaded, they ended up repsraying the whole bonnet and it is not good. There is a massive run in the paint down one side and a lot of tiny white specks (dust?) under the clearcoat. There is also a weird chip in it (in a more visible place than the original!) and a dodgy bit in the lacquer.

I have told them they will be getting it back to factory finish or they will be having the car back and giving me a new one.

I have asked for a replacement red bonnet from another Fiesta as an option as I am certain the ST has the same bonnet as the normal car. I guess there is the risk the colour will not match though.

Argh.

As it is just the bonnet, do people reckon a brand new race red factory bonnet from another new car would match the rest of my car or is there likely to be a difference?

Locate another fiesta st in your area, and jimmy the bonnet off of that. :p

But seriously, I wouldn't back down. Keep on at them, if you're spending a huge wad of cash with them they should do everything in their power to make you happy. I'd just request a new car.

They are being very amicable about it but if this is the best they can do in their bodyshop I am never going to be happy.
