Dat beard

Mines getting a bit long now... Actually having to brush it after every shower to keep it looking 'neat'.

Mine needs a bit of a trim as it is a bit all over the place.

I was tempted to grow the whole lot out but it takes about 5 months to do properly and I am getting married in 4 and will need to shave for that so will start growing it from the day I get married on wards.

Just bought that Kalamazoo stuff from Lush and the nice lady gave me a small free sample of R&B hair moisturiser.

Very nice stuff but cor blimey is it expensive. £6.50 for a 110g of soap and £11.50 for 100g of moisturiser! :o

So I thought I would throw up a recent photo with my beard.

Me trying to model my friends design for a martial arts related clothing/apparel company -

So did anyone make beard balm in the end? There was some interest. I'm looking at buying some soon to give it a try.

So whats with using balm or wax or whatever for your beard?

I use clippers with no attachment and I keep my face as stubble but shave under my neck and upper parts of the cheek so it looks manicured.

However, I have a new lady in my life and quite likes a bit of beard - I let mine go for a few days but trimmed it back to her disappointment. I've also noticed it seems to be di rigueur to sport a beard in the gym.

So what tips can I get for keeping a beard but keeping it soft? I got one of those amusing old fashioned photo meme things from said lady asking to touch my beard. I'm sure you guys will have seen it.

I've wanted a beard for so long, need tips! I heard lots of protein helps? Sounds like broscience to me but could work.

Strong Britsh stuff, rubbed liberally on your downstairs regions helps the follicles to grown on your face. Proven Science yo!

It's actually not a joke, there are chemicals within mustard that do promote hair growth.

Lets establish some facts.

Mustard isn't a wonder drug to make hair grow, it takes weeks for results. About 4 applications per month will stimulate it enough.

There isn't a way to slow it down. If you stop using mustard, nothing changes. The mustard just gives it a quick boost. I'm surprised at how many people think it's a wind up, it's not because it's mustard, its just one of the chemicals in the mustard. I'm sure there are products available that contain the same chemical, but you'll pay over the odds for them. At least the chemical is in something relatively tame, like mustard, rather than urine or something.

In general though, just leave it and see what happens / how it grows. Some people's beards are thick and super bushy as they have very close follicles, others, like myself have much more spread out follicles so whilst a beard does grow, it doesn't look as awesome as others. :(

Mine as of today:

To wash your beard you have beard washes, shampoos and conditioners which you can apply in the shower (I personally just use water as shampoos can dry out the hair). After a shower you then have 3 options, you use depending on what your beard needs are.

There's Beard oil, balm or wax. Beard wax is simply to keep your beard in good shape, especially useful for longer beards over 4 inches of length, this provides the most hold to keep it in shape and tame wild hairs.

Beard oils are used to moisturise the skin under the beard and to also help soften the beard as a leave in conditioner. It's mainly for taking off the itch if you have dry/flaky skin (My skin is terribly dry, this helps remove any dryness do I don't get beardruff). Beard oils provide no hold to keep it in shape.

Beard balms are used to also moisturise the skin and hair and act as a leave in conditioner to soften the beard. They help with beard itching and are used to provide a moderate amount of hold to keep it in shape and help tame some wild hairs, but won't hold it as much as wax would.

I currently use oil, but I'm going to give balm a try to see if it suits my beard. If you're just starting out you can get some Jojoba oil, a short beard won't need much hold, and it'll be cheap to buy. Use about 3 or 4 drops on your palm and rub through the hair to help stop the beard itch (Which will appear after a week or two). If you get to a point where you want to grow it longer, you can then invest in a comb, boar bristle brush and balm, but you won't need these yet.

Munky you should shave your head, will look better with a grown out beard, not a good look since the hair is so fine on top.

So what do you guys use to trim your beards? (NEVER!)

I used to have an istubble but I want to grow it more than it will allow.

Scissors and a comb if it's getting a bit crazy, it's too long for my remington beard trimmer guides now.
