New headphones for music and casual gaming

Just question about these Sennheiser HD 600. they are open back so what is their noise isolation? Also the thing i I dont have anywhere to go and listen to any of them as I live in Plymouth Devon. I been to HMV and they only have beats, lower tier headphones and some bose headphones but they havent got the ones mentioned here. Maybe anyone of you know good plce to try and listen to headphones as I have no idea where to go?

Richer Sounds and Sevenoaks have places in Plymouth, go there for starters.

I suggest the OP goes and listens for himself as what other people think sounds good is not the way to buy Hi-Fi in my opinion.

That is sometimes the only possible way for some. It's pretty easy to recommend a headphone based on needs. People only tend to get picky as their experience level increasesthen they may want something that has subtle changes.

I'm 47 and have spent circa 2K in the last 2 weeks on 1 pair of headphones and 2 DAC's. I have spent lots of kit over the years but frankly bar speakers I struggle to notice significant differences....even when a bloke in soft shoes explains it to me with lots of passion. I know the sort of sound I like, might not be able to put that into words, but I know when I hear it.

Kinda makes me wonder why I spent 2K come to think of it

You'll find that headphones and speakers make at least 90% of the difference in sounds - DACs, Amps and sources generally have minor, subtle differences.

Thanks a lot for your answer I will go richer sounds and seven oaks tomorrow and I will ask about headphones that you stated in this thread.

Hi there I just got a message about DT 880 premium, 300 ohm are they any good as someone wants to sell them for almost half price than new ones? Also what kind of amp would i need to drive them or sound card?

That was me! I use a Fiio E10k and it worked a treat. You can spend as much as you want on one really, although that sort of thing is the sort I would be looking at if I were you!

Oh and I've just remembered they're 250ohm not 300 :)

I will reply to your message in a minute from my email. What kind if amp or sound card would I need? Also I'm quiet worried that they are open so sound will leak and I will use them on the go. although if they are that good I may buy them but I would need to buy amp as well as currently I have sound card Asus xonar or something like that.

Sorry I just realised that you did post one amp. Is there anything decent that will last a long time like 2-3 years for 100 pounds?

I believe your xonar will drive them sufficiently, although unless we know the exact card I wouldn't quote me on that.

880's are semi-open, so they don't leak as much as other cans, but they wouldn't be appropriate for out and about use, due to sound leakage and a very long cable.

The 880's leak a lot so just be aware of that. They are also lean sounding and quite bright and dry so music with good energy like rock will sound quite dry and aggressive. If that apeals to you then they are worth a try.

Hi there guys it's me again and this is question just out of curiosity why ATH-M50x have so many positive reviews and people still recommend DT 770 pro 80ohm? I will be going to richer sounds and sevenoaks to try and listen to ones mentioned if they have them. I will let you guys know about my hunt :)

because the ATH-M50x is usually a Beats substitute while the DT770 80 ohm is one of the entry level headphones for good quality sound, along with the AKG K612, whose price has recently been increased by getting on for 50% (low stock levels probably). The 80 ohm DT770 sounds almost as good as the 250 ohm version, it's bass is probably slightly less well controlled but as it is quite efficient and has a low input impedance it is relatively easy to drive, which saves on amps.

DT770's are great for the money but for music nothing comes close to HD600's.

I own both as well as HD558 and Q701's. Sold my HE-400 for the DT770's and I'm happy with this albeit a headphone that costs a third of the price.

HD600's just sound on a completely different level for me.

OP though should be more than happy with DT770's if he only has a £150 budget that is where his money should go

K612. K550 is a snore fest, though excellent if you require a budget studio monitor. K612 is more well rounded than the DT770s, wider soundstage and better clarity imo.
