Took my little lad to Game today in Boston, Lincs - he is 9. He has been saving his 'odd job' money for a few weeks now and had 2 x £1 coins and a further £6 in silver and bronze.

3 people serving, however, 2 were pricing up a console a lad wanted to sell to the store. We waited maybe 20mins before been served.

My lad very politely said he has a £7.99 game, he has 2 x £1 coins and the rest is what i have saved up for. The girl serving said she will not serve him and he has to go the bank/post office to change it as she is too busy.

I asked if i counted it for her and put it into £1's would that be ok and she could serve other people while i did that? Nope, but she will call her manager.

Off she toddles and spends 5 minutes on the phone and say's no again, but this time it is her manager saying no (she spent more time on the phone than it would to have counted it )

Anyway, i paid with my card and as the bank/post office was closed (after lunch on a Saturday) i am now stuck with a pocket full of change - ha!

Yes, she did not legally have too accept the cash, but the lad was quite proud of himself saving up, deciding what he wanted to buy and making the purchase himself - only to be shot down. I am an avid gamer, my lad is a future gamer and future customer, but even he said not to worry, we'll buy it online and never come back here again - lol!

Just a vent really as nothing can be done, just wanted to share the experience!

I guess it depends on how much of it there is, but we're always happy to take change, as it saves breaking out the bags of change for the till every time. Silver shouldn't be a problem. How much of it was bronze? A bagful?

Game always has really bad waiting times. Longest I've waited is 40 minutes in Game in Lincoln. I don't bother with the chain anymore. Online is cheaper and I actually get what I want when I want.

Well I guess he learnt a valuble lesson today. Girls are mean :(.

What a hardship counting out change...

Isn't there regs on what denominations can be used to make up to a certain amount. Assuming you weren't paying the remainder in copper it shouldn't have been an issue.

up to 20p in 1p, 20p in 2p and £5 in 5p is the legal amount they have to take, anything after is their discretion (or not). We had a mixture, but don't know exactly as i would have to go and count it again.

It is easier and cheaper to buy online, but it was a chance to take him into a game store to see the latest games and me a chance to get a Costa!

The Royal Mint give you the amounts you can give across in any ordinary transaction as legal tender. However as long as you're not taking the mickey I suspect most shops won't bother too much about it if you paid £0.30 in 2p coins for instance.

Sounds a bit petty by the shop here but I can understand it's probably a bit trickier for them to handle if it's in a busy period.

I was served by the most inbred socially inept human being in Game yesterday, eye contact was impossible as was conversation. I don't understand the staff there...

We had this discussion at work a few days back... the UK legal tender for coins are as stated on this page:

http://www.royalmint.com/aboutus/policies-and-guidelines/legal-tender-guidelines

But I do feel for your son; I can remember saving up when I was a kid, if stores never took in large amount of coins back then, I would even have had the experience of saving up and buying stuff with my own money.

I can remember saving for ages for a rubbish LCD handheld, a game and watch clone.. some of my fondest childhood memories are playing with the rubbish toys I brought with my own savings... lol

I've sent off an email to their customer services - not holding my breath, but i've told them about my kids disappointment and whatever response they make i will allow him to read it good or bad.

Their chance to gain or lose a potential customer.

I work for said company and no store I've worked in would turn away a child and his pocket money. I can push this for you and have it investigated if that would help.

We have machines which can count coppers in seconds, this shouldn't have been an issue.

OR you could have just offered to pay by card when they said no to change.

I did that, so my lad has the game. The issue was he wanted to pay with his own earned cash.

Hey Riddler, kind offer. I did say to the girl that this was my lads pocket money, i wasn't happy and would be complaining so i took her name. Like i say i have just fired off an email, but if there is anything you can do extra it would be appreciated.

My only concern is that as i have discovered, legally the store did not have to take £3 in coppers.

Legal tender only applies to making a payment at a court. A private business can decide what to take and what not to take and who to serve as it sees fit.

I've worked in retail at a chain store and £6 in silver wouldn't have been a problem.

No legal rights to it, £3 of coppers is nothing and would take about a minute to sort out. Trust me across the receipt details and keep me updated on our customer service here and when I'm in on Monday i'll forward all the information to their regional manager.

Pretty heartless really. I can understand her turning away a grown man with that amount of change, but a kid? - pfffft.
