Afternoon,

Looking at going up here in a few weekends time. Will be going with the girlfriend and our dog (Husky).

I've done some climbing, but her and the dog obviously haven't although they are use to very long walks.

Reading around, it seems to be between two routes, Miners Track and Rhyd Ddu. Which would you recommend?

Does the Miners Track go to the summit tho? If not the Rhyd Ddu would obviously be preferential.

We'll take lots of supplies for us and the dog obviously but anything you would suggest?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Both go to the top from what I remember. It's not particularly hard so doubt you'd need your climbing skills :D

Girls walk up there in flip flops in summer and all sorts (I'm not recommending it obviously) Tiring yes, hard, no.

Miners track is basically for the most part just a nice stroll up a well used path to the summit although it does get a little rougher just before you reach the top IIRC but nothing major, no one should struggle to reach the summit.

With the dog and a non hill walker, I'd probably go Rangers or Llanberis, Rangers would be my personal preference (which is the way I've taken non walkers up in the past)

Rangers is usually quietist.

And if you are used to long walks and want to make a full day off it you can go from llanbarris and incorporate the moel cynghorion before joining the ranger, if you have a o's explore map, look for the foot path behind the youth hostel, then follow the ridge around looking down at the lake . Then either down the main path llanberis path(terrible and busy), or go down miner or pyg and get the bus back to llanberris.

Glen Perish guest house is a nice place to stay, if you're looking for somewhere.

Llanberris Path is your GF hasn't done any mountains. Also, be aware that unless she is used to mountain climbs it could be a slog.

The Pyg Track/Miners track is quite steep in places *and* has the problem of a wrong turn about a third of the way up puts you on Crib Goch and you don't want that.

Good luck!

As my mate who is absolutely terrified of heights found out on a rather windy day :D:D

It's just a casual uphill walk for the most part, with a few steeper bits that require slightly more effort. Some of the tracks are harder than others with one or two being reasonably challenging but still not climbing.

Takes about 2-4 hours up and an 1-2 down, but can vary wildly depending on how busy it is, the conditions, which track you take, your fitness, etc. Make sure you leave the summit at least 3 hours before the sun sets, just in case. Or cheat and get the train :p

Or take a light, I want to go back and do a night summit.

Trouble is Snowdon is just to popular, it doesn't feel at all wild. You might as well be in a city with how busy it gets. But it is close and the largest.

I saved a German couple from making that mistake once. The conditions would have made traversing Crib Goch difficult for even experienced scramblers.

Whilst it isn't the most challenging of routes, it is fairly long for those not experienced and best never to see any route up a mountain as causal because is she turns on you a mountain is a dangerous place to be.

Miners goes to the summit but it's a bit crap really. It's flat for the majority and then you have to do the whole ascent in one hit. You're much better taking the Pyg track from the same starting point (climb, flat, climb, summit).

Rhyd Ddu is a nice walk in good weather and was the route I took the first time I went up Snowden (don about 30 ish times now) but the Pyg is my preferred route.

Absolutely do not advise doing Llanberis, it's so tedious and, I believe, more difficult given the extra distance to cover and the constant gradient.
