used cards delivered 'as new' ?

How do people know it's the exact same card they receive back?

IIR OCUK open and test random stock.

Easy, take a pic of the serial number on the card. Ive also heard of people putting a small mark on the card with one of those uv pens when sending things back to various places.

A few days later now. I'm very surprised no one from OCUK has even attempted to explain their practices on here to their customer base.

My guess is that they put returns back into stock and try their hand at selling them off at full price. Most folks probably won't even notice, others will accept anyway, you still get the warranty after all - and it's a moderate PITA to go through the returns process.

It's probably the flipside of OC generally giving a full refund on non-faulty GPUs people return after opening. On that basis, I'm fairly comfortable with it - just send it back if you get one, they seem ok with taking them and sending another.

If they find they're unable to sell returns at full price, I would guess they'll start routinely charging a restocking fee, as is their right.

I don't see the point in opening and testing random stock though, the chances of finding something that's actually faulty is tiny, and if the item is fine it ends up being sold to someone who notices the packaging has already been opened.

Iirc from some years ago if random stock is opened to be tested or sampled it must be then re sealed with a qc sticker from the company and recorded in a stock sampling book. I'm sure it falls under the audit control methods but I'll have to look it up. I vaguely remember it only applies to stock sold a new. And to be honest I wouldn't accept a new phone from a shop where the seals were broken so why should we accept it for anything else we are buying "as new"

Not the first time I've heard this about Overclockers. Pretty shoddy to be honest, I'd be on the phone asking them to explain themselves pretty sharpish. Hopefully it's a mistake but I'd certainly expect a new and seal product when I'm buying new.

My previous 3 cards all came from OCUK. None of them were sealed up like shrink wrapped or security sealed or anything. Are you guys saying that they should have been? Must admit, I did wonder about that a bit (but not a lot)

Whatever.

The last card I bought 3 years ago is still going strong and TBH I've no inclination to change (OK that's a lie. But I'm waiting for what's happening in May or maybe June )

Twas a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 670 OC BTW. Bought on release day from OCUK and it's still running at 1250mhz. Never skipped a beat. Great card.

If you buy very early on release you usually won't have these kind of problems.

I got a few R9-290s a good few months in from release and all were visibly open.

My 2xGTX970s and Titan X were bought a month or less from release and had the seal.

This has to do with the transition time from sending out and people sending back in.

The last 2 cards I got from ocuk ableit in 2012 and 2013 were both sealed with manufacturer tabs And cards were I'm sealed anti static packs.

I'm confused.

And. That doesn't help. Much.

What is this seal of which we speak anyway?

I've never seen a sealed , tamper proof graphics card box.

Seriously.

OcUK have commented on this in the past, returned items aren't put back in to be sold as brand new items, they are returned to manufacturer as faulty or sold as b-grade. Sometimes with the volume of traffic through the warehouse things may get mixed up, not acceptable but maybe understandable for a one in a thousand.

Gibbo has also explained before that not every manufacturer seals their GPU boxes, and most these days don't. Some put stickers on the outer box, some a sticker on the anti-static bag, some simply tape one or other, and some seal neither. Helpfully, manufacturers will also do different things for different cards (so a 280x shipment may come sealed and a 290 shipment doesn't) and sometimes they'll change the sealing process with each shipment so just because the last 280x boxes were sealed doesn't mean the next ones will be, hence OcUK can't say whether a card being unsealed means it's been opened before or if that's how they were manufactured.

Consistency would be nice so people can be 100% sure they are the first ones to touch their new GPU since the last person at the factory, but it appears it doesn't happen and it's outside OcUK's control. I would say to check the card when you open it, rather than rely on seals or lack of, and if you're not happy to contact Customer Services as they'll see you right. :)

Well from a personal perspective, if it was a crap clocker and or had coil whine, it would go back but if it was a tidy clocker, I would be more than happy to take a used card/CPU/Memory every day of the week.

I ordered a Sapphire 290 Tri-X OC from OCUK a couple of months back and it had two sapphire seals on either side of the box.

It's not really enough saying that 'things get messed up in the warehouse.' You are paying for a brand new card, and I wouldn't settle for anything less.

Also I have never had this issue with any other computer supplier in the UK, they never seem to 'mix things up.' Just saying.
