Decreasing Procras..maybe steps how? :P

Obviously Procrastination is a big issue, and everyone does, it but some are worse than others, like me. Ive put off doing actual uni coursework for 2 weeks, and usually leave it to the last minute and end up to panic. I'll admit it, i do have a slight gaming addiction, but I get the work done in the end, I wish i could just stop messing around and do the most important tasks of my day.

Any tips or advice of ways to help? :3
 
You need motivation.
Start the coursework a day earlier than you usually would.

I was the same as you at uni early on, but in the 2nd/3rd year I had to do my coursework earlier otherwise I'd end up with 4 large pieces due in on the same day.

Plan your time and set yourself targets.
 
You need to realise that getting things done sooner rather than later often means less work in the long run. You also need to realise that writing out all the words in a thread title isn't a bad thing. ;)

Having said that, I'm on OcUK when I should perhaps be editing this marketing script...
 
Switch off pc, phone, tv, radio.
Find a quiet room.
Do your coursework for three hours.
One hour break, eat, go outside.
Resume for another two hours.
Rest of day free.
Repeat until done.
Not too difficult to do. :p
 
switch off PC? hmm he might be studying computing :p Even so I'm sure most students need a PC to write reports etc
 
Sleep more, fresh air, plenty of water for a start.

Set study goals per day. Achieve them.

Review goals if you're hitting them too easy, amend accordingly.

If you're not hitting goals, take yourself out into the garden and hit yourself in the knackers repeatedly until you've learned your lesson.

Restart objective plan.

Rinse, repeat until objectives met.

I've struggled with the demon known as Procrastination since my childhood and I have yet to find a way to deal with it so I had to adapt: when I have something to do, I have to do it better than 'normal' (as I often miss deadlines which requires an excuse) and using less resources.

It would probably be easier to stop procrastinating yet here I am, posting in this thread from work, while I have a pile of documents is waiting for me.. :D

I'm a writer. Procrastination feels like it's part of my DNA. I like to tell myself that it's part of the creative process.

Writing can be draining, so it's perfectly okay to step away for a while and do... other things.

Just for a while.

Then I can get back to it all fresh and be... wait, what's that? Have to watch that, first.

I'm okay for time. Then I'll read a bit of that. Bookmark that.

Wait, what time is it? Crap, I have to work out and then get ready to cook.

Guess it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

On the more serious side, I've set myself scheduled blocks for every day and try to meet them the best I can. Most important stuff gets done FIRST, so I don't drift away later into the day and not get to it. Sometimes things do just drag on longer than expected (writing is quite draining work) so can end up taking up blocks over three days instead of getting done in one.

Not as good at keeping it in check as I should be, but I think scheduling ahead does help (I schedule three weeks in advance, and chop and change a little if something drops in my lap).

I have a few thousands words of mind-numbing business copy to edit tonight. I also have a really good game going on Company of Heroes. Aargh!
 
I have always struggled with this, I'm 30 now and still have issues.
I can't fully focus on work unless it's last minute or extremely important, i need to feel under pressure to achieve something. If i try chipping away at it or try completing it early it tends to be half assed as the motivation and attention isn't there.
I've come to terms with the fact that I work best under high pressure and try to use it to my advantage, my best work has been done last minute, the trick is learning to judge it right and leaving just enough time to come up with the goods.
 
I put the 'pro' in procrastination. I'll go to almost any length to avoid study, even if I justify it by inventing something that I 'need' to do, such as stripping and restoring a door, refurbishing my alloy wheels, doing things I wouldn't normally do such as going shopping etc. It's some weird psychological thing that I can't seem to beat.

Still, it hasn't bitten me yet and that last minute pressure seems to have the right effect.
