body shaming gone too far? (***warning*** Daily Fail Story ***warning***)

So how would you suggest they advertise their product? A product they aim at people that want to be fit and healthy?

Well, tbf it's pretty easy to use images portraying fit and healthy people without using bikini clad women

Not that I have any issue when they do ;)

US dress sizes are about 4 smaller than the UK, so she was a size 14-16 (US), which is ~10-12 in the UK. Much like the US size 0 is a size 4 in the UK.

Reminds me of the time I was buying a female friend some jeans in New York and I was approached by the shop assistant when I explained I needed the jeans, UK size 16. The manager was near and came over telling the assistant the US size is 4 less than the UK. We all looked at the assistant.....waiting.... and you could see she couldn't work it out...

The manager then quietly said.."That's a 12 then...." :D

Yeah. I nearly put a disclaimer in about old age and muscle wasting illness, but decided not to muddy my point :p

You are right, but the amount of weight work needed for that is really nothing like the sort of levels many take it to.

Nothing wrong with getting as strong as you can. It has nothing to with being unhappy with how you look and wanting to look better.

Have to add this link.

92 years old and lifting weights has massively improved her life. More people should lift weights as being stronger will greatly improve your quality of life when you're old.

great doesn't mean at any point that someone larger isn't:-

1. Healthy
2. Fit
3. Attractive
4. Allowed to wear beach clothing.

Of course it does.

Stop thinking that being overweight is okay, in terms of overall health.
If you are over weight, its nto a healthy state for you body to be in, and puts more work onto heart lungs, liver kidneys and blood.

How many fat people do you see in the Army if they can be so healthy.

Attraction has nothing to do with it, that up to the individual.
Sure they can wear beacth clothing, just like I can buy a boat with a harpoon.

hamgalaxy :)
blubbernaught :p
beefgoblin :D

urban dictionary would have a field day

personally i could never date a bigger girl. its as much what that figure represents as much as anything else. My gf is def on the slim side at 9st and 5'9"
its down right terrible that you get judged for saying such things

I got in trouble after a blind date when it emerged I didn't find a friend's friend attractive as she wasn't particularly active... I'm not saying she was fat or anything but she wasn't exactly in shape either. But to be fair your shape is a reflection of your lifestyle, how well you eat, whether you play sports/exercise or slump in front of the sofa/spend the weekend in the pub. It isn't just an aesthetics thing.

Anyway flipping the tables around I asked my friend what she'd think if I set her up on a blind date and the friend I sent along was a couple of inches shorter than her(I do actually have a short friend I could have done this with too which may have been amusing)... apparently that was 'different'... Yet IMO a girl deciding she doesn't want to date a shorter guy is arguably much more superficial as height is purely genetic and not a reflection of that person's behaviour/lifestyle.

There needs to be more honesty in government advice about diet. No more subjective 'healthy balanced diet' spiel because it's clearly not working.

If you are overweight -barring a distinct minority who have a medical condition- then you are consuming too many calories. No ifs, no buts and no maybes. You eat and drink too many calories and if you want to lose weight you need to reduce your intake. It will be hard, it will be depressing at first but you'll pull through. Exercise will provide many benefits but it is not essential to lose weight. Also, if fruit and fruit juice tastes deliciously sweet it's because it contains lots of sugar - you have not cheated nature, it's still sugar. Consider a lower sugar source of vegetable and fruit and pay attention to the calorie content.

The vague advice about balance and moving more and eating better does no good. Calories in vs calories out - it's easy to work out your base metabolic rate and start from there. Its not perfect and you'll tweak it to you body but it'll give you a fair starting point.

This is another example of political correctness gone way to far.

What the hell is wrong with admitting you like slim ladies more than obese walruses ? Nobody will ever convince me to like the ''BBW'' type of women, I find them disgusting, just as I can't force women to like short guys like me ( which, unlike the fatties I can't really do anything about now). It genuinely annoys me, as I like ads with fit women in them, yes I know the internet is full of porn and hot women, but billboards like these :

when I went off the motorway after a days work were always a nice sight.

Unlike these politically correct plus model billboards/commercials, ugh :(.

Same as I'd appreciate this:

More than crap like this:

I don't like huge women, why, for the sake of political correctness, show some chubby Neanderthals on billboards instead of nice slim fit women ?

Exactly, it's not hard. Unless you have some kind of medical condition, it's just a matter of slightly increasing your activity ( not effin housekeeping or a walk in the park, but at least a 30 min run every day), and lowering your calorie intake. I'm on the opposite end, I'm having trouble gaining weight, simply because I don't like eating, and eating more than 2.5k kcal per day is a headache, I've been upping my calorie intake for ages now and still struggling to gain more than 500 grams per month ( but gained a good 12 kg's over the past 2 years). It is ridiculous how much people are eating these days, and becoming heavy because of it imo.

Perhaps I'm biased, because I see eating as an inconvenience, and when stressed, I actually stop eating rather than eating more like some, but I can't imagine how much people are eating to become what they are, it's really not hard to stay under 2500 or even 2000 calories per day, it's **** easy, if you're busy doing other things...

Gaining weight > you're consuming more calories than burning.
Losing weight > consuming less calories than burning.

It's so simple. This applies to any build/body type, endo's, ecto's and meso's...

And saying' that's different 'is always justification in itself.. Go figure!

Agree with all of that

Snowdog: Have you tried peanuts? Super high in calories with awesome protein content. I have a friend who has exactly the same issue and he just adds a handful of peanuts to make up his deficit.

I eat about 50 grams ( I actually weigh my portions) of various nuts ( I vary) every day, usually Cashew nuts or peanuts as they're cheap, but also loads of Almonds, Walnuts, Hazelnuts, etc too. Problem is, nuts and fish are expensive. I eat loads of chicken and pork though, and eggs and dairy products.

My problem is just quantity of food, I don't like many carb rich foods...

Cutting out carbs will make it harder... I'm not a huge carb fan and my intake comes largely from home made savoury pancakes. Flour/buckwheat, water and eggs and you can use them as you would a normal wrap if you make them thin enough. With melted cheese and chicken inside is a quick and awesome post-workout meal.

Protein and fat is a mixed blessing on your situation because its properties of making you feel full for longer is reducing your total calorie intake by suppressing appetite (unless I've completely misread your post). Ah, I remembered another trick he said worked - fill a shotglass with olive oil and neck it... Presumably followed with plenty of water to wash the taste away. Sounds grim but it worked out for him.

People love to over-react, misinterpret, and find things to be annoyed at these days.

Would anyone give a stuff if it was a picture of a guy with a 6 pack? I'm fairly chubby, and I know I wouldn't. In fact, I'm not offended by the adverts of toned men which are all over clothing adverts, fragrance adverts, and whatever else.

I think the people who wrote on those adverts are just insecure vandals making themselves feel better, not feminists trying to make a point.

What a waste of time to be annoyed at.

So if the lady in the advert was wearing sports bra and gym shorts/leggings. With the slogan "Are you gym ready". For say Nike, would the reaction be the same?

Just a brand using some of the most widely used techniques to get sales. Sex sells.

Be right back, need to go deface an Abercrombie poster for showing a man with a 12 pack.

Home made weight gain shakes would help. I can make one with over 1000 calories and have 1-4 a day. Just had one now with whole milk, oats and olive oil. Takes minutes to make and is quick to drink.
