Are all "All Inclusive" resorts like this?

I'm doing an 'all inclusive' for the first time this year. I've always been vehemently against them and have always done my own thing, but this year, after pulling my hair out looking for holiday ideas, an all inclusive package looked like a decent option on paper. Reviews seem good so we'll see how it goes.

My other half and I are in the same boat... It's a bold decision; I'm interested to see how it pans out.

I have no idea - I've never stayed in one.

I've always tailored my holiday packages and I like going out exploring and finding places to eat - it'd bore me to tears to stay in the same resort most of the time - and why pay for food you aren't going to eat?

This. Very much this. I've had the misfortune to stay in one, and quickly came to the conclusion that I can't abide the places.

No you just went to the wrong one, go small and exclusive preferably in the Maldives :-) although even then I would recommend one that doesn't include Alcohol in the all inclusive price as it reduces the chav count. The place you went lists 'unlimited top shelf spirits' as one of it's six big features on it's home page so that should tell you all you need to know about the market they are aiming for!

This, working for a tour operator by far the best all inclusive has been the Maldives by a country mile, bit more pricey but worth it.

All inclusive that includes alcohol is something I imagine I would like to avoid... (due to people drinking to get "value")

How can you not have Holliday ideas.

Sounds like hell, wouldn't want to even try an all inclusive place.

After checking it out on tripadvsior (and seeing as it had won the travellers choice hotel award for 2015:eek:) - I noticed the last scathing review ......

And if that wasn't you - then it must have been someone that had exactly the same sort of stay :p

Looks like a fantastic place - but you obviously had a bad time.... and as was pointed out above - it is Mexico - and it is free drink (the favorite haunt of north american 18-30 somethings who are just finishing spring break)

Not all the All-inclusive breaks are the same - we had a beautiful time in the Moon Palace in Cancun for our honeymoon - and will be going back hopefully at 15 years married.

I had a look through a few of the 2-star reviews for it earlier (IIRC there are around 20% as many 2-star as there are 5-star, so quite a lot). Most of them seem to mention the pressure-selling on the extras and questionable food

I've only stayed in one all inclusive and that was last October in Mexico, between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, it was an Iberostar, for 4 nights.

Have to say it was great. All day buffets (the type where you see them making the food infront of you)...alcohol whenever I wanted..specialised restaurants in the evening..pastry/coffeeshop..ice cream parlour...all for about $110 a night I think it was. It was a very very big place though, had to get a lift in a golf cart to get round to places, so it was nice and quiet.

On site nightclub was the best thing, went only once though. Nothing quite like having to walk only 5 mins to get home after a night out. :p

Stayed at one in Rhodes. Food was actually... semi ok. I'd think most none-Greeks would have been reasonably impressed with what was on offer (until it turned up in other dishes a couple of days later) my other half was pleasantly surprised by a couple of dishes but turned her nose up at a fair few too (Greek's don't generally eat **** food).

Pool was generally ok, was family friendly but wasn't covered in kids.

If you use an "all inclusive" for food and accommodation only and get a cheap car hire for the rest (or stay somewhere with ready access to better entertainment) it's probably ok as a "cheap" option. If you are looking for something amazing and quiet as a wonderful relaxing getaway for 2 I'd generally suggest you avoid.

No but then I don't go during school holidays for exactly the reason of wanting peace and quiet.

Been to various hotels in Spain and Caribbean and never had a problem.
Never been during school holidays though as not limited to them. Guess it's luck of the draw.

I was in an all inclusive Hilton in Costa Rica back on March, luckkily we didn't pick up the bill.

It was OK but hardy value for money. Cocktails used the cheapest spirits imaginable. Breakfast was fantastic but the rest of th meals were so so. Good, but not great and small portions. Plus you had to reserve days in advance to get into something like the steak restaurant. Pool area was nice but busy and lots of drink 18-20-odds shouting.

Compare that to the place we stayed in before hand which was $250 a night cheaper, incredibly peaceful, had nicer pool. Cocktails were 10x better and cost around $7, lots of good dinner places around with great food for $10. Argentina steaks for $20.

I wouldn't pay to stay in an all inclusive.
