Theresa May confirms with Dimbleby that a Conservative majority will vote in the Snoopers' Charter

There is also things that happen on the cusp of something being made illegal...

A funny example would be face sitting in UK porn. The film maker forgot to delete the face sitting archives that were recorded the day after the porn law change.

20 years later he is trying to do something constructive for society that the big dog does not like.... not to worry we have this prooving he is a law breaker, lets do him, or at least make a massive fuss about this to discredit him.

Yes, I know it is all a leap, but like I said.... The chances are, it will be abused and used to control society in crazy ways. Just like the terrorism act.

Most people with "things to hide" will just find other means.

Exactly, it's unlikely to stop them. Personally if I were a terrorist I wouldn't be sending texts/emails etc.

The current ISP porn filter (an initiative designed by a suspected paedo :o:rolleyes:) has begun to show how ineffective it is.

End to end encryption/WhatsApp next.

That's the kicker with democracy - the people get the government they deserve. Nice going Britain /thumbsup.

Well done thanks to all the people who voted blue, now watch how everything turns to ****

Guess you've already forgotten the ID card fiasco during the Labour years?

The reality is Labour would almost certainly (try and) introduce something similar if they got into power.

They are all as bad as each other, and by each other I include parties in other western nations (see the recent Canadian legislation that just passed as an example, or the US laws).

So?

Got nothing to hide, if it means catching lunatics on the fringe of terrorism then i'm not fussed.

Totally, it would have prevented the attacks in the U.S. earlier this week, Paris earlier this year and the attack on Lee Rigby. Oh wait, no it wouldn't, they were all know and monitored by police before their respective incidents.

The only time (in the UK at least) a "terrorist" has been charged for planning an attack was recently, they were caught after being stopped by police. To be fair to them the case was thrown out...

Perhaps the security services should monitor the known threats with the current legal framework they have before we start introducing laws that take away even moe of our privacy?

Its what the country wants, so who cares.

Only 36%(?) of the people who voted voted for the Cons, that is NOT the people.

More people voted left wing than right wing, but we have a majority with a right wing government.

Get lost man, "what the country wants." What utter tripe.

Fixed broken system is fixed, and broken.

I'm not completely clued up on this so please correct me if I'm wrong, and I hope I am but isn't the main crux of this not that they're storing your data (everyone is happy for the Government to have access to that, because they've "got nothing to hide", right?) but the way in which the data is going to be stored? From what I've read there'll be little to no encryption and it'll all be stored by the service it's coming from (Google, Microsoft, etc).

Also, don't France already have this sort of communications monitoring? If so, it quite clearly doesn't work.

This comment typifies the misunderstanding of how this treaty would be implemented.

This comment typifies thosse who are blindly walking into a world where our freedoms and liberties are quietly being stolen from us with the use of subtle salami tactics one slice at a time.

Of course it isn't going to work - you might catch some facebook level terrorists but the really dangerous ones will be using far more sophisticated techniques and definitely not assuming they can hide behind encryption.

Is it? You assume people don't make mistakes. How did the guy behind Silk Road 2 go down? Well it started unravelling when he put his Gmail address on a forum/message board when giving advice about how to access it :o.

What's the massive issue with the encryption stuff? Obviously anyone who's super keen to be secret, and never makes a mistake, can encrypt their messages in a way which is basically impossible for the authorities to read... but what would be the problem with requiring a company to grant access to messages if the appropriate warrant - so essentially bring modern communications in line with old school communications (given that's how it works if they want to intercept your post/tap your phone/whatever). It wouldn't just be anyone being able to look at messages willy nilly.

And then the FBI illegally broke into the server Silk Road was hosted on.

The thought of the tories being in another 5 years is just terrifying, they'll run this country into the ground. Once my uni course is done i'm jumping ship to another country.

The average joe is going to be significantly poorer with a tory government.

It wouldn't have been much better with Labour, they would have run it slightly less into the ground. At least with the Tories they'll do it right, they'll be no question or blaming other parties or circumstances at the end(although of course their will be).

63% of the country (who actually voted) didn't want the tories! The only people who will be better off are the millionaires and corporations.
