Who's been to Singapore?

The girlfriend and I are booking a trip to see her family in Brisbane, and mine in Auckland over Christmas and New Year. Yikes its expensive!

We wanted to stop over in Singapore but the best deal we could get was arriving at like 7am, having that day and night, then flying out just after midnight the next evening.

It sounds a bit harsh for the jetlag but we're flying so close to Christmas I don't know if it would be wise to push it another night (or even if there's availability).

Anyone been? I understand it's uiet compact and there's not a huge amount of 'sights' so to speak..

You should be able to make a longer stop over for not that much more cost.

We're going to Auckland in December too but we're going via dubai / Brisbane, but on the way home, i managed to split the flights up so we get 3 nights in Sydney then 3 nights in dubai, all in all, it cost no more than £100 extra.

We actually went into a Thomas cook shop and tailored it there, and they arrange it through netflights, it wasn't really anymore expensive than booking online. We paid just short of £1200 each for our flights with Emirates.

I stopped over in Singpaore last time I flew to Oz a few months back. If you plan ahead (read: before you go!) you can do every decent attraction in 3 days. We allowed four and ended up with nothing to do on the last day. The wait between being kicked out of your hotel room on the last day and being picked up for the late flight (I was on the same time) is a KILLER. Ask as soon as you get to the hotel about courtesy rooms, bag storage or anything similar :).

If you're flying with Singapore, their stopover package including the attractions pass is brilliant value for money, almost everything we did there was covered. The safari (both day and night) and Singapore wheel (Singapore Flyer) are brilliant, as is the river cruise. The gardens by the bay looked good but it was far too hot and it's not near any tube/bus stops, so you have to get off by the start of the F1 circuit (Singapore flyer) and walk over the bridge. Bright side is you get to walk through (literally) the three-part hotel with the boat on top :)

It's an incredible place, but be prepared to sweat, sweat and then sweat some more ;)

Not a huge place, you can get a flavour for it in a day, Marina Bay, hit some street food etc.

Weather is the same all year, hot, humid, stormy. Alcohol is frighteningly expensive, especially in expat/tourist traps like Clarke Quay.

As already said, you need 3 days I think really

It's an amazing place, I'd love to go back again

If you do get the chance eat in Ku De Ta or at the very least go for cocktails there. It is located on the top of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. Fantastic views at night

3 days is preferable if you're unlikely to ever do it again but 2 days will certainly give you a good feel for the place. I love going via Singapore when we're doing AKL <> LDN

Yeah, the issue is we're flying out the weekend before Christmas so it's super expensive. Flying on Sun 20th means it's so much cheaper but doesn't leave us much time to physically get to Oz for Christmas!

Might investigate doing our stopover on the way back...

Thanks for the pointers. I think sweating is going to be a theme of this trip seen as Brisbane could hit the 40s..

We did ~26hrs in Singapore and would have liked longer as we preferred it to Hong Kong which was our other stop-over. 41hrs is obviously better but don't forget with jetlag you may find you need two sleeps, so once you factor in travel to/from the airport and check-in times you may not as much time for exploring as you'd hoped.

I have sone the same and longer would have been nice but it was fine to see all the major sites as long as you get to sleep on the flight.

Hmn considering doing our stopover on the way back. Our time in Oz and NZ is with our respective families so thinking about it, some time to ourselves in Singapore afterwards would be quite nice...

Friend of mine at work has just told me that she much much, much prefers Hong Kong to Singapore.. argh!

(I have actually been to HK and thought it was great, but my girlfriend has been to Singapore and really loved it and thought I should see it. Hmn)

We did a couple of days in Singapore and an Couple in Hong Kong to and from Australia.

As long as you plan what you intend to do in advance you should be fine, the tube in Singapore is one of the best around and very cheap. Getting the cable car over to Santosa Island and wandering through the amazing gardens is highly recommended.

Hong Kong is much more interesting than Singapore imo.

Full disclosure : I lived in HK for 4 years recently :)

Plenty to do in either place for a few days though....

I did 3 days and I thought that was enough although I was by myself so may have found more stuff to do if I had company

@mid_gen I'm going to have to pick your brains one day. After playing Sleeping Dogs on PS4, I have a maddening desire to go visit Hong Kong now.

As for the OP, you have to go in that infinity pool on top of a skyscraper and take a selfie. :D

Well, we got the jitters as you do when pricing up flights like this and the girlfriend has gone ahead and booked before it got even more expensive. Woohoo! (My gosh that was expensive  )

As planned, we swapped our Singapore stop to on the way back, so we have 3 full days  We thought a mini-holiday to ourselves on the way back would be much nicer, having had to put up with our respective families beforehand..

Plenty of time to do some reading but if anyone has advice on where to stay in Singapore, what to do etc. :D Looking forward to some street food and swish cocktails in pricey hotels :p

Food markets = super cheap. Worth having a quick Singapore Sling at the Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel, not great (pre-mixed) but the hotel is like a timewarp, very cool.

Be aware that standard price cocktails are going to set you back the best part of 20 quid each. Cheapest drinking I found was happy hours around Club Street. Clarke Quay is super-expensive and a bit ****e.

Good decision :) Who are you flying with on the Singapore leg?

I'd highly recommend spending a day (and evening) at the night zoo - hands down the best zoo i've ever been to anywhere in the world.

The night zoo however is on a different level, its almost pitch black throughout with only minimal path lighting so you get to see all the animals when they are most active. Walking through the flying squirrel enclosure (well, hanging around in there for a few min) and watching them chase each other around, gliding from tree to tree swooping over your head is amazing
