Holiday Recommendations?

Well unless you like staying in youth hostels and eating at McDonalds a meaningful holiday for £400 quid a person to Scandanavia isn't happening.

This^

Say you get flights for circa £100 x 2. That leaves you £600 for a hotel for 7 nights. Good luck finding a half decent hotel in a major Scandinavian city for less than £100 a night.

Stockholm cost me £550 for 2 nights when I went 4 years ago. Ryanair flights, 3 star hotel for £260, £290 on food and drink.

Croatia is a good shout

I went to Crete half board basis last year including transfers and flights with a good 3 star hotel paid £369pp for 10 nights last week of Sept going to 3rd Oct....it's a lovely place so i would say there.(stayed at Bellos Apartments in Hersonissos plus it was 30-35c each day)

Heavily drawn between Crete and Florence I think. Anyone been to Florence before? Also what can be done in either place?

I like florence. Would probably choose it over Crete. Florence is a great place for exploring (better than Venice), easy enough to get around and lots of small squares with cafes etc. Sit and have a coffee and people watch. You'll be able to find a very cheap flight to Pisa and get a coach to Florence. It's about an hour transfer.

In Italy I recommend Naples, much less tourists, the best pizza I had in my life. Plus you are only an hour boat ride from Capri, a 45 min train ride to Pompeii or an hour train ride from Sorrento on the same line.

Yeah anywhere in Italy sounds good to me. Just not Venice or Rome. Where shouts did stay and how much was it?

Romania is stunning, home to Dracula and the castles. Have a look for the Transylvanian Alps and the town of Brasov. Flights will be a bit more expensive than Scandinavia but you can get really nice 4* hotel (old houses on hills converts into hotels) for £30-40 a night, leaving loads for doing stuff. Serbia is almost as nice.

Alternatively Slovenia is supposed to be stunning as well, haven't been there yet.

I booked a wonderful flat in Naples on the top floor with a roof terrace with wonderful views of mount Vesuvius and the city. It cost 550 euro for a week and flights were circa 200 pounds. I can post a picture when I'm on my PC. It was the best holiday of my life.

Malta can be done cheaply and when I was in Vicenza in Italy it was very cheap there with with good train connections, only cost 6 euros to get to Venice each way and that's without pre-booking. Close to Verona, Parma, Modena and Lake Garda. Lot less touristy and I'm sure could land a nice Airbnb apartment for a reasonable price.

Tosno what was the name of the place you stayed? Italy is getting more and more interesting for me. But still need to decide where exactly. Florence, Naple, Sicilly, Lake Garda. Too much choice. It all looks so beautiful.

Majorca. Just did 4 nights all inclusive for £125 inc flights, hotel was **** but with a free bar, who cares? :p

Edit: also ideal if you break up with your bird - my single mate pulled for 2 nights out of the 4!

If you do go with Florence, take a look at Hotel Lorena Florence. I stayed there a few years ago and do recommend it. At the time, I paid €80 a night (October 2012)

It's a central location, quite close to the train station and of course within walking distance of everything you would want to see. Hop on a train to Pisa (30 minutes) for some further sightseeing.

If you don't want to do Rome or Venice, why not just jump on the train down to Naples from Florence? Italy has high speed rail (bullet trains), cheap and easy!
