As a country how should we deal with cases of depravity?

Some parts of society are filled with broken people, and people who commit despicable acts. How do we as a country fix this, or try to minimise such occurrences?

Specifically, the case of a father who beat his own 4 year old to death over the course of 10 days, researched how to reduce swelling online, researched how to glue teeth back in after he smashed out all of her front baby teeth.
What do we do to stop this, to deter others? What do we do with this man, life imprisonment? Yes. Danger to society? Probably. How do we protect ourselves against him?

I am generally quite right wing in my views on justice and policing, but I have no answers for this. I do have a four year old daughter, and the thought of anyone smashing her teeth out physically repulses me. I cannot fathom how someone could do this to their own child, over a course of days, watching her suffer.

Then we have this,

The 21 year old, with a nine year old daughter who has ben taken into care. Hopes her daughter will forgive her for going off the rails and getting pregnant after being raped at age 12 by her own brother. They themselves were in and out of care as their own mother was homeless for a time. That's three generations of mess.

I feel sad today.

its all part of the human experience, you cant fix everyone, you cant save everyone from bad things, its just human nature that some people do bad things

I suppose we put our faith in a system that admits that it isn't always the answer. You can't always fix broken. Awful, terrible things will happen - do happen - every day and you, we, can't change that.

It's be pretty neat if we were less awful to one another and bad things didn't happen.

Now you've made me feel sad :glum:

We deal with it as we do now. With the correct Legal procedures.

Wanting to save a few kids from people like this isnt looking at the big picture.

I don't think providing examples is limiting or definitive.

It's actually an overly informed OP in that we have something to talk about rather than some stupid DM link about UKIP or other terrible things which no one cares about.

The question is how draconian are you willing to be? In many of these cases of child abuse or neglect, the problem lies with the parents and certain backgrounds or upbringings can significantly increase the likelihood of future abuse. If the ultimate purpose is child protection, then controlling who can have kids is a step that could be considered. After the incident punishment doesn't solve the problem, nor does it really deter someone who isn't thinking clearly in the first place.

How far are you willing to go, and how many innocent lives are worth impacting (people who fulfill the trigger criteria are not all going to be terrible parents, just a statistically significant increased volume)?

Indeed, certainly with the second case, where a now grandmother had her two children taken into care, then during a period they were back with her one child raped the other, a girl already having alcohol issues. There must be something at a social level, far from draconian that we can do, to ensure that a similar pattern isn't repeated with the now granddaughter, who is currently in care also.

It would appear her own mother has made great efforts to sort her own life, and hopefully that persists, but there must be some system, some coverage, something we can do to stop this spreading to a further generation. I don't think the answer involves throwing money into social care, but a rebuilding of the structures we have to work in a completely different method.

Draconian on one hand with punishment perhaps where rehabilitation isn't possible, but massive carrots for those who may be affected in future to ensure they are not. I don't know. I said in my OP I have no answer. I just pondered what people think could be partial solutions, or help in these cases.

send them to syria to fight for ISIS

and it will continue to be until people change their viewpoint and realise it's not human nature or it wouldn't be a tiny percent of the worlds population committing such crimes.

do these kinds of crimes happen in remote tribal villages ? or is it just big societies

OR you know a better way is to just ignore the whole thing and let people make mistakes, no matter how grave.

I'm not sure if you're serious or I've misunderstood, you want to see someone who beat and killed a child in cold blood free because "mistakes lol"?

Part of the problem is that we live in a society where rules/laws prohibit us from doing so many things, yet anyone can have a child. When you think about it that is crazy, but no one will ever pass a law to block that right. As a result things like this will continue, especially when people like that breed like rabbits and increasingly the better members of society are having fewer and fewer children.

Depravity has gone on since man first walked the earth and it will do until the day we're wiped out. All we can hope for is the majority will never be that way inclined.
