Moshpits / Ninja pits

^ I went to Prodigy recently in Cardiff and that was pretty much perfect in my book. Only a few overly aggy people.

I was there and the crowds I was with were douche saucer-eyed chavs that didn't get it! was a shame.

Enter Shikari a few months before in Cardiff was a much nicer alternative, people helping people up etc and not just thinking it's a reason to hit people.

Shikari - those hips don't lie, right?

I moshed ironically when i was 17 at collage then discovered better ways to channel my testosterone fueled rage, like sewing and needle craft.

I'd thoroughly recommend this festival for a great friendly crowd... you won't tend to find many (if any) of the chavs you get at large UK commercial festivals - but you will find plenty of friendly Hungarian, Dutch and French people in addition to non-chavvy Brits* and plenty of others from around the world.

Two huge circles formed when the prodigy played last summer and people were generally behaving themselves - no hitting people or silly nonsense like that, but obviously people running/jumping about etc..

*which also means.... no fat chicks - Hungarian, French and Dutch girls are generally very attractive and not as frequently as obese as our local population

Throwdown at Download festival 2006. Main stage, outside, 2 huge circle pits. Brutal and loved it.

So many more though, prodigy & hatebreed saw some good pits. I lost my wallet with £200, a camera and phone at machine head (I was enjoying myself a little too much and didn't think about all that stuff at the time :) )

Sikth was also brutal, back of the tent to the front, sheer carnage. Love it, and love the feeling. Anger and power but also respect for everyone around you. Basically if you're going to be a dick you're going to be punished.

Maybe I'm too old for it these days though

Never too old. I moshed to Hatebreed around 10 years ago and will be doing the same at Ghostfest in 6 months time. Exactly, pits are all about respect.

You can guarantee if you get too big for your boots or pick on small younger people someone will notice and hammer you.

I must have been in over 100 proper moshpits and only ever seen one fight - this was at a dance event from memory, something like pendulum where a chav didnt understand what was going on and punched someone for knocking him over, even after the giy appologised. Needless to say it ended very badly for him

Throwdown mosh pit = just get out. :D

I used to enjoy the odd mosh pit in my younger years.

Now, I just stand on the edge and push the stragglers back in when they lose their footing. Or stand a little further back and get angry when the edger bumps make me spill my beer a little. :D

and then someone notices them hammering you and thinks they're the ones being a dick...

or someone does something inadvertently and someone else decides that person is being a dick and takes it upon themselves to dish out punishment

tis potentially a bit subjective

In the REAL moment-to-moment actuality of it, there isn't time to dissect like that. So that doesn't happen.

Everything in a pit moves so fast that there genuinely isn't time for anything to be misinterpreted. You aren't behind a keyboard.

Best pit I ever saw was Metallica playing at the LA coliseum about 11 years ago. It was all quiet and then the first chord was struck and a 50 foot pit just opened up in an instant.

Most fun pit was chimera at the bierkellar in Bristol. Amazing gig for such a small venue. Really good crowd. Was slippery but I was picked up every time I went down, and even managed to retrieve my shoe when it came off.

Intensely dislike when people are out to hurt someone though.

the whole point is that there isn't time to think about it... tis just someone reacting to what they perceive to be someone else being a dick

misinterpreting something is much more likely precisely because everything happens so fast

Ones I've been in, absolutely not a fight. Hard shoving more, whenever someone goes down, they get hauled to their feet instantly.

The atmosphere it generates is insane, I wouldn't expect someone to understand them unless they have been in one.

Don't be daft. Everyone can tell when there is one person being a tool

Pretty much the most stupid thing ever IMO. I can understand why it happens, but I still think they're generally awful. Those of you getting annoyed at "those ones who don't get out the way, then get annoyed when they get hurt!" - you're committing/condoning assault. Doing so in the name of "having a good time" isn't an excuse. Someone doesn't opt in to these things purely by being in that place at that time. People shouldn't feel threatened or pressured to move out of other people's way against their will or under threat of injury.

Inb4 "O Zefan I bet Ur well fun @ parties"

They are great fun! get the right crowd and it really gets your blood pumping! Parkway drive for me had some of the best pits. and Terror having some of the most painful I have ever witnessed .

not being a small person makes it more enjoyable, I have seen far too many younger/smaller women go into fairly rough pits and get demolished
