Finnish man fined £83,000 for speeding because he earns £10.1 million

Great idea for sure. For your average citizen, a speeding fine is a good deterrent but when you have rich people who wipe their backsides on notes, they need to feel it more.

Terrible idea, but no doubt popular with the jealousy driven on the forum who don't understand that the punishment should not vary based on irrelevant factors to the crime.

It's called a fine, which means it can be variable.

Otherwise, it's just a 'fee'.

I also don't agree that it is jealousy that I think punishments should be relative to personal circumstance so everyone is treated equally by our crime and punishment system.

We already do this in the penal system. People who committed their crimes because they are mad get sent to secure psychiatric institutions, people dying of a terminal illness are often released so they can die with their families etc.

We take financial circumstances into account when it comes to civil matters like divorce settlements so why should speeding not be the same?

Doesn't matter the value is.
And no the fine is not separate to the points, they are very much joined.

So way to not actually say anything useful.

I don't see how you can argue against it, i don't really understand the mindset that doesn't see it as fair either.

Its a complete leveler of the playing field. If you don't break the laws you don't get fined anyway.

As there's already a leveller and a far better system. Points. There simply isn't need for such a system for driving.

You keep posting that but I think the discussion is largely about if you want to fine people at least make it a sensible one.

The merits of the points system are obvious.

You cnalt separate the two.

Why is there a need for an insane fine?
A £100 fine is not a deterrent for most people. Most people have way more than that as disposable income monthly, let alone once a decade when you actually get caught.

There simply isn't justification for means tested fine for speeding, when we already have a levelling system.
Now if there weren't points, you would have a point. But that isn't the case.

Doesn't Finland actually care about good roads and respectful driving?

Where as we seem to love potholes...we need money for the roads these ***** ruin, it's only correct that it's proportional.

The fine adds to the deterrent though. Give me three points tomorrow and I'll just shrug and carry on, it's not hurt me in any significant way unless I already had 6 points or more. Take £100 off me though and that's something real, I'll be kicking myself and thinking of what I could have spent that on.

The points system hurts recurrent offenders, but is forgiving of the infrequent offender. The fine system punishes the infrequent offender.

Yeah right. shrug off points. Pull another one. That post is utter BS.

There's time and places for means tested fines. Speeding is not one off them.

I'm sorry but I'm not going to reply to you if you are just going to call posts BS. The post makes sense to me. Points are nebulous and not a problem until you accrue enough.

But zero sense to everyone else.
That's why people turn down speed awareness course as money is obviously more important than points. Just LOL.

You know full well that post is nonsense.
Everyone does anything they can to avoid points. Money at that level is meaningless.

For speeding I agree it's stupid.

For parking though on a repeat offense it could be useful.

Though maybe instead a doubling system every parking ticket doubles the cost of the next if it's within 6 months and so on. That would add up very fast for regular offenders.

I think you're a little off there, saying that most people wouldn't see a £100 fine as a deterrent. I work a whole 12 hour shift to earn that. It's what I spend a month on food. I'd manage if I had to, but it would seriously hurt.

I don't think the amount is the deterrent by itself, it's a risk assessment; how likely am I to get caught? A decent chance of getting caught AND a fine You'd find inconvenient probably would stop most people. The point here is that what 'inconvenient' when we're talking finances will vary from person to person.

My 3 points put my insurance up by more than 100...

I disagree and I think you should put some more thought into your posts.
