I never have, until now
I know this is a big claim but to preface this; I've used lots of different oils in my car. It's 21 years old, the handbook recommendations are long since irrelevant, so recently it's been running on Castrol Edge 5w-40. Previous to this it has been Fuchs pro-s, Gulf competition, Halfords own brand, Comma fully synthetic, Toyota own brand fully synthetic and a few others I've forgotten. Usually 5w-40 with the occasional 5w-30 or 10w-50.
I've never been able to discern any difference in performance, engine response or feel, even when jumping from a 5w-30 to 10w-50. The only difference evident has been hot oil pressure at X rpm changing up/down by a few psi as you'd expect when using a different viscosity.
I recently changed it out for some Millers Nanodrive CFS 5w-40, mainly because I'd heard it was in the group of oils you'd call 'decent' & I saw it on Ebay for £55 delivered & thought why not.
Well having run it around for 200 miles or so now I can definitely feel a difference.
To kind of describe it, if you decat a car you usually experience that noticeable fall in torque at part-throttle load in low/medium rpm as this is usually where an OEM exhaust is tuned to work most effectively. Well it feels like the opposite of that. Increased perkiness, feels more willing to rev, turbo spool from closed throttle > WOT seems noticeably improved - like a very slightly smaller turbo has been fitted & much more 'ball-bearing' like in response.
Since buying I've read all the marketing BS about gains of +5hp over the entire dyno curve, torque up 20% blah blah and would have previously just dismissed it out of hand, but now i'm not so sure. Maybe they are onto something with this 'nanodrive' stuff
Or maybe they lied about the viscosity and it's actually an 0w-15 and ruining my engine.
So yeah, if you need some and it's suitable for your car, I recommend spending the extra £15 over what you'd normally get & giving it a go
Interestingly I've read that when Hartech rebuild Porsche flat6 engines they invalidate the warranty if you run on any other oil than this one.
