I just read an article on the BBC and there is yet another issue that is threatening women and their bodies. Now that plus size models have become more mainstream they are now saying that its a derogatory term and shouldn't be used.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-32289744

Womens sizes are a measurement of your size. You can be a fat size 10 or a skinny size 10. Someone who is 5' will be fatter than someone who is 6' if they are both a size 8.

In comes the retarded argument that "I saw a plus size model and I couldn't believe she was considered plus sized because she was a healthy size / was thin". Yes, she was 6'1" tall and has an amazing figure but she is still in the category the fashion industry considers plus size. Its a categorisation. Its not a commentary. Its not a judgement saying "this person must be fat".

I'm quite amazed that women haven't started protesting the size system completely because it puts labels on their weight.

The internet is an amazing thing but it seems to make everyone think that they are being political and changing the world when they write crap on their flabby bodies to feel empowered. If your weight bothers you, do something about it. If it doesn't then:

a) don't judge people who work on their physique.
b) don't whinge about how the world is trying to put you down.

If someone is fat, they should be referred to as fat*.
If they're really skinny, they should be referred to as really skinny.
If they're somewhere in the middle/average/normal, then they should be referred to as such.

*I am fat.

Women are now scrambling to achieve fat acceptance, thinking that if they can do that then they can go ahead and eat as much cake as they want, become a hamplanet and still get a boyfriend who looks like a boy band member. What they don't realise is that only other hamplanets would want them.

Women obsess about their weight because they know that underneath the thin veneer of 'equality' we've fooled ourselves into believing, humans are still sexual creatures. Being considered physically attractive gives you a massive social advantage.

If you can't be physically attractive, then the next best thing is to try and warp societies concept of what is attractive. But, its not a battle they will win. The vast majority of men will never be attracted some overweight behemoth with pink hair.

Women are probably obsessed with their weight because as a society we make them obsessed with it.

It's partly a cry for help and partly attention seeking.

Because we live in such a competitive, media judging, stereotype branding society.

Obesity should be a capital offence. ;)

Nah but seriously, if you're fat and society says no, then you either fix it or shut up, its not some nasty disability we should accept

This trend does worry me a lot. The UK has a massive obesity problem, yet companies are slated for advertising products using skinny, attractive women (admittedly some are very underweight). However, the constant onslaught of "Plus size is best", "Curvy women have nothing to hide" etc. etc. is surely going to encourage the population to become more and more obese.

As godinman posted above, overweight people need to be targeted as much as underweight people or we're going to have a serious problem and basically have obesity levels as high as the US in no time.

I think that the whole attitude of fatceptance comes from a bigger social attitude of not working hard for something, but rather wanting it right now for no effort. Overweight women want to be considered equally attractive as their healthy weight friends. But instead of exercising or changing their diets and generally making a positive change to their lives, they try and warp the social norms for a quick win.

This.

Also, can't get enough of the term hamplanet. Glorious!

We had a much healthier society mentality a few years ago when there was a bit of a witch hunt for parents that feed their kids junk every day, pushing burgers through school fences at lunch time so their little fatties didn't have to eat sandwiches.

Being heavily (lol) overweight is dangerous for yourself and is irresponsible if you have children or a family to support. If you are fine with the consequences and feel it is a fair trade for nutritional indulgence, then by all means you can live how you wish. Expecting others not to judge you based on it because their ideals should match yours is presumptuous no matter how you look at it.

Using the media to advertise this lifestyle is just plain stupid. Making an unhealthy lifestyle acceptable so that the masses can feel better about their mass is more than just irresponsible.
