live tv software?

If you're struggling, it sounds like you didn't set it up properly. I moved to a media PC BECAUSE of the issues I've had with things like Sky and so on. A media PC is by far easier and cleaner to run and watch media from, plus it'll play games better than any console (mine at least).

Well hang on, were talking about live TV here. Obviously if your looking for a gaming PC a Sky+ box is probably not your best bet... :)

Because I don't need a 360 with a htpc. That's my point.
Or have you missed the only need one device bit, I know you haven't you're just sprouting rubbish.

How would I play 360 games?

That's why I have a 360. Its not used for anything else.

You seem to be complaining about media PCs in general.

who cares what you do, 360 games suck.
Steam stream so you can play proper games.

No they don't. If a game you want to play is on Xbox, how do you play it without an Xbox? Derp.

Lol

Ask for way to watch Live TV, get suggestion for watching Live TV, declare suggestion 'wrong' and get all worked up because suggestion doesn't fit a bunch of other criteria never mentioned.

Yep, were on OcUK alright...

Not worked up at all, just pointing out you are very wrong.

It wasn't even a good suggestion, does it actually fit in with the OP? No
Do I need to mention unrelated criteria? It's pretty clear what I'm looking for.

Did I read a different OP to everyone else?

So windows 10 doesn't include windows media centre now and it's officially dead.

What other software is there?

I couldn't figure out how to get xbmc working,
But there must be something else simple and elegant out there, what does everyone use?
Or are those of us using windows media centre stuffed.

You asked for software to watch Live TV to replace Media Centre. Thats it.

At no point have I suggested getting rid of your PC for all the other things you do on it.

It's funny you say that, because I never said about looking for a gaming PC, I said plus it'll play games better.

Yep software to replace media centre, how does a several hundred pound box fill that criteria. Did I ask fir hardware?

Even when explained you still carried on like an obsessed squirrel

You said it plays games better than any console. Thats a gaming PC, unless your suggesting an Intel NUC beats a PS4... :p

Lol. Whatever. I'm off to bed. All of my suggestions are better suited to the task of watching live TV than any Windows software.

*presses 1 button, Sky+ box goes to standby and TV turns off*

:D

A media PC is what you make of it, I've got a 3930K, with 16GB of RAM, 2x 7950s, all SSD, all water cooled in case that's in the same size format as my Onkyo amp as my media PC.

For the most part it's used to play movies and TV shows via XBMC or Netflix, so it's a media or "HTPC" that is capable of playing games too.

I also have a PC for games and work specifically at my desk. A media PC doesn't have to be an Intel NUC.

Nice! But I bet that cost a bit more than Glaucus' £170, or any of my 'expensive' alternative suggestions ;)

It did, obviously. But my point was that your complaint was about media PCs being a faff. I haven't had any issues with my media PC. It was easy and straight forward to set up.

I used to have a more traditional media PC, with a few TV cards in it, and at the time they worked great. The only reason I don't have that set up any more is because I realised I didn't actually watch much in the way of live TV.

Have you guys stopped bitching so we can get this topic back to somewhere near where it's meant to be?

  • I tried the latest DVB Viewer beta last night and it worked far better than the stable version did last month, in that it let me timeshift. For live TV it's far better at setting up than most of the other Windows solutions too. It also scales better than WMC in that I can stick it in a small corner of the screen and all of the controls remain usable (unlike WMC which loses the quick forward and back buttons, which are probably the most useful of all of the controls). I couldn't find a way to group record series though. I think this is my current favourite.

  • ProgDVB was frustrating in that it seemed to work brilliantly but I couldn't find a way to edit channel lists or combine tuners (so my quad tuner card found 4 of each channel!). I assume this also would have given the headache of manually triggering recordings by having to select the tuner you wanted to use, which is far too much hassle. It's a shame as otherwise it seemed straightforward and just worked. The recording of series looked best of them though.

  • MediaPortal looks far better than it did a couple of years back, but it's very much designed for a remote or keyboard. Trying to navigate using a mouse is painful to the point where it's impossible to purely use a mouse using the default theme (and as I often sit at my PC while using the TV on one of my screens, that's a shame). I also think it's unintuitive when navigating around (working around recordings for example). I'd get used to it if it's the best bet otherwise, but it's a shame it's not as polished as it's very close to being a perfect replacementreplacement.

I'll test these out in the coming weeks (as well as any other strong suggestions people come up with). I'm not looking for a WMC replacement (so would rather not use something like Kodi or Emby), just something reliable to watch, record and manage TV.

Well downloaded media portal, reasonably easy to set up, not as easy as wmc.
Seems to be working fine, excoet it hasn't downloaded epg yet. Hopefully it'll di that soon. I can't see a force download epg. Anywhere.

So will continue to use it for a while, but it's looking good.

its disengenuous to say emby is a wmc replacement, at its simplest it can be nothing more than 'something reliable to watch, record and manage TV'...its just it can do more...

Theres a a hdhomerun plugin for emby now.

I presume any of these apps are reliant on epg for future program data? If so, doesnt that rely on over the air data and ultimately a bit crap? Media center downloads it instead from the Web I believe, so do any of the apps suggested fulfill that key piece of TV functionality and user freindliness that ive had with media center? Please forgive me if i'm talking bum cheeks, but thats my understanding anyway.

Cheers.

Just tried a few of the above apps mentioned. Bottom line: way more complicated than wmc to set up and then not really as good to use with a remote. If I persevered I reckon Media Portal would be okish. Really not worth the time investment for the light time shifting usage I use unfortunately.

Will use the tuners own software or my smart tv itself for viewing now and use i player etc and just stream historical missed recordings.
