How do you justify your high end graphics cards?

Bought a 980 for my birthday, had a perfectly good 780ti at the time. I "kinda" justified it by having just bought a 144hz Gsync screen. I do get satisfaction that I know i am running games to the best of my ability for the budget I have, Titan money is out of my reach realistically without further justification which even with my man maths I can't reach!

780 ti to a 980!?

Man, talk about an incremental upgrade...probably all you noticed to begin with was quieter fans...

Bit more of a performance gap between them now, but that is only because Nvidia have let the driver support slip (and no doubt totally intentionally as well.....scumbag company).

Had you saved your Geld, then you may be in a position to get 'almost a Titan' now in the form of the GTX 980 ti. That would be a bit more like an upgrade that you wouldn't have to check the driver signatures to be sure you had. Even then, I personally prefer 100% + performance gains when I splash the cash for an upgrade, which I expect to get when I go from my HD 7970 to the GTX 980 ti hybrid....

Playing Witcher 3 on my laptop (GTX 980M) just now, which actually gives better gaming performance than my HD 7970. Crazy the amount of performance that they can squeeze into laptops these days...but yeah....if my laptop is beating my desktop, then I *need* a new GPU.....and at least I amn't spending on it on crack.

I went from 7950 to 290X lightning as after selling games I got it for about £215. I like to upgrade when anything is on close out to get great bargains so I don't mind being a year or 2 behind the latest tech. Just got me a Sony 50w829 while there on sell out as well.

At the moment playing witcher 3 on ultra and it looks/plays great.

Ive gone theough about 3 cards in the last 12 months. R9 290 > gtx 980 > crossfire r9 290x 8gb's.

At the moment i feel no need to upgrade as there isnt any single card that could outperform my xfires setup,

Was debating a 980ti but then tried to jusitfy it and couldnt. I see new tech and think i need it but leave it in ur basket for a couple of days and you normally see the light

IF I can't run the games I'm playing with full settings at 60fps + then it'll be time to upgrade.

Until TW3 came along I had no issues and it's only now I'm getting the upgrade itch.

When second hand 290s dropped to the £150 price bracket, crossfiring a pair of them seemed too attractive a proposition to pass up.

I wait to see what is being said about the graphics card I want and if people claim it is too expensive and I am being robbed etc, I buy it :D

But seriously, I want the same as what Ayahuasca said earlier, and that is everything looking sweet and running smooth at 1440P without too much compromise.

I justify it by comparing the cost to the enjoyment I get out of having them. If I wasn't getting the enjoyment then I wouldn't buy them.

I can't justify the cost of the cards (especially Nvidia's) now. The price of them has gone through the roof and is just disgusting. Better to wait until they start appearing in the MM and pick up a bargain.

I want to move to 1440p but its really hard to find the perfect monitor also pc games are far cheaper in general my brother spent £100 pound on 2 ps4 games the other day whereas I paid £13 pound for mkx with the dlc

It will be painful the first time, if you lube up it helps but will still be painful. The second time around it gets easier.

lol but actually quite true. Buying my first Titan hurt like a mofo (especially as I bought 2) but then buying the Titan X was quite painless :D

I stick to second hand cards normally, my 7990 was £200 with a full cover waterblock and is still letting my run the latest games on high/ultra (provided the Xfire profile is out).

All these £500 cards are too little bang for buck for me.

For high end single cards , I'd just say I'm having it for an early bday or Christmas etc, now I frequently purchase 2 of those , 2 970s , 2 980s , now two 980tis , I just have to admit I cant justify them . But I still want them so I'll buy them knowing I'll likely never get value for my money and sell them off cheap befor the next decen upgrade comes . I just like new toys and as long as money's there's to pay for them that's all the justification I need .

You are an advertisers wet dream lol

This is where I'm at. As a 40 year old gamer, I am long past the "must have the latest and most expensive cards for my forum sig" stage....or to appear on a "Role of Honour" thread lol.

I now prefer to wait until the new gen comes out and then cherry pick the best MM deals from those so desperate to get the new gen cards, that they sell their, still absolutely perfect to use, "OLD GEN" cards in the MM, for peanuts.

Xfire 280x for less than a 980 cost yet same performance. If I wanted I could drop the cash on dual 980Ti's but I prefer letting that money sit, earning me more money, in the credit union and use the money for something I really need when the time comes. At my age an emergency is usually expensive and I can't call on mummy or daddy to ask for cash. I guess it's part to do with the fact I'm forty and I can't justify spending that sort of cash on something that depreciates worse than a new car does.

No offence to anyone who has done this, as it's your cash and your call, but those that have dumped 980(s) to go 980Ti(s) you are a marketeers favourite prey. That additional outlay, for what...an extra 7 FPS, that isn't really registered by the human eye? I don't get it. I just get the fact that the hype machine has another victim....but then again it's not my money so I'm not in a position to preach to anyone who does.

Prey ? These are purchases that I and others can choose to take or leave , it depends how you perceive it I suppose . it can be a few frames difference or it can mean the difference between playability at 4k with a lot eye candy with
decent minimums or Unplayability at 4k .

Its also more / different hardware to bench and overclock and learn about . As it stands I've owned every GK & GM part and it's helped me learn , gave me hours of fun tinkering and let's me compete competitively with some of the best overclockers HWBot has to offer.

That for me is more than just 7fps .

2 years ago I'd of said exactly the same mind , but I'm now of the opinion I'll be to old by the Time my pension kicks in to enjoy these things as I do now. IF it means eating tins of beans and sitting by a hobo fire @ 70 so be it :D

the problem here is you see what others have in there sig and the high benchmark scores and feel like your missing out when all we realy need to worry about is do games play ok on what we have

As title really.

I'm gonna be in the market for a new card within the next month and I'm quite excited to step up from this aging 7950.

Ill probably be stumping up more money than I have in years because the draw of 60fps at 1440+ definitely appeals to me.

At the same time my card is still managing 1440p at Medium detail on most of the current crop of high end games (W3, GTAV and SoM) managing 30fps in each of them.

When you sink £550-850 on a Ti or Titan what is giving you that buzz?

Part of me thinks that its a lot of cash for a handful of games right now.

Its money, you cant take it with you, who cares. The only guarantee in life is that you're gonna die, make yourself happy while you're here.
