A friend of mine is a modest gamer (mostly COD games) and he recently bought Assassins Creed : Unity and his PC just fell over trying to run that :p

So with a budget of ~£800 I'd like to try and upgrade him to something that will play modern games, modest settings are ok.

His current spec is

Q6600 with appropriate Mobo and RAM
Generic 500W PSU
Geforce 560TI
HDD

The only thing we can really salvage is the case, which is an Antec 900 and re-use the mechanical HDD

So I'm thinking, CPU, Mobo, Ram, PSU, an SSD for running the O/S, probably still use onboard sound - he uses headphones exclusively.

Not sure if we can fit a Graphics card in that budget as well? So if we can leave some left for a future Gfx card and wait to see what the new AMD 300 series comes in at.

I have lent him a HD7950 for now which might tie him over with the new build.

Yea, I might just wait to see the price point of the 300 series before plumping for the gfx card and get the rest now.

Even though the minimum spec for Unity says a 7970 I'm sure the 7950 should just about cope...

Is the 550W PSU going to be powerful enough to future proof for single GPU's, like the upcoming AMD 300 series?

I would hope its enough power.

It was certainly fine for a 290/290X and some of the 300 series are just rebrands of these (with tweaks) the high end card tht features the HBM memory is most likely too expensive.

It's been a while I know, but am just ordering the items today and that cooler is out of stock.

Any suggestions for an equivalent replacement?
