Windows 10

it seems win 10 will have a default product key

u must fully compute the upgrade first then it sends MS information.

just reserving the upgrade doesn't send anything information to MS like keys/hardware ID

That confirms that you won't simply be able to install 10 clean from an ISO using a 7 key. You will need to go through the upgrade process once its released to get a license. Then you can reinstall after.

Some other things confirmed on that page are that Retail will remain Retail, and that you can't downgrade back once you take 10.

If I install the preview, can I upgrade it to the final once it releases?

If you install the preview over a 7 or 8 install using the Windows Update method, yes.

If you clean install the Preview from an ISO, no.

odd thing is win10 as a rollback feature..

also the guy says this.

When you upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 - your product key or license for Windows 7 doesn't get impacted. So long as your original product key or license for the downlevel device can still be used on that device - the upgrade to Windows 10 won't affect your downlevel license..

he saying you can downgrade

No he's not. Hes saying the license doesn't get impacted, i.e. the terms of it, Retail or OEM, etc.

the guy was asking him if he upgrades from w7/8 oem would he basically be able to use it again. im guessing if he didn't like w10

anyway if downgrading wasn't allowed they wouldn't of added a rollback feature tbh..

They haven't added a roll back feature.

Its in the Technical Preview, but that doesn't mean it will be in the final release. We won't know that until the end of July.

I'm still curious to see how the upgrade handles drivers. For example on my P77 motherboard, Windows 7 doesn't install USB 3 drivers natively, i have to manually install the Intel ones. Windows 10 will have native USB 3 support of course, so what will happen during the upgrade?

I have had to do the same thing in windows 7 with USB 3 drivers as if I don't have them installed then my external HDD comes up with not recognised

I installed all windows 8.1 drivers from my motherboard website. The chipset, inf, storage and intel RST. otherwise the hard drive performance was very bad and had unknown devices in the device manager.

Do you have to register (now) for the offer to install over the coming year to be available?

Or can I ignore the whole matter for six months, and then sign up and upgrade (all for free)?

Considering the worse thing that can happen is you have to.. install some drivers, why is it an issue?

I'm wondering if it's better to uninstall some drivers before the upgrade in the hope that the newer native ones will be installed during the process. Any thoughts?

you can ignore it and just download the ISO file when its released which is what I am doing.

the W10 update is just that it will download the update to W10 for you and then allow you to install it when you want. saves the hassle of doing it yourself and then they will e mail you to say its been reserved

I'm still waiting to reserve my copy. I had to contact Microsoft because I wasn't getting the reserve icon on my toolbar. It turns out, you can only reserve a copy if you're using a retail version of the qualifying OS. I'm on Windows 7. I built my PC and had to purchase an OEM version of Windows 7 because Microsoft had stopped producing retail copies. I've been assured that I'm still entitle to a free copy of Windows 10. Microsoft just haven't worked out how they're going to upgrade OEM users yet.

doesn't matter what version of windows 7 you are on as long as its on SP1 and above you will get the update otherwise you need to format and install from ISO. also the PC needs to be not on a domain, is the update installed for the W10 upgrade to appear.

I don't have a legal copy of 7 on a really old laptop and I got the update appear on mine.

That is what I was told by an employee at Microsoft from technical support. I've got both files that are needed. How do I remove my PC from a domain if it's on one?

Anyone else on 10130 have issues with graphics drivers? Mine keep installing the AMD 15.2 driver which is crap and doesn't work at all meaning I have to reinstall 15.5 over the top. Thing is, I've turned off driver updating but it's still replacing it!

well first off check if its on one, right click on my computer and go to properties.

you will see a section that says Computer name, domain and work group settings.

there is a section that says domain, it should be empty.

if its on a domain you can click on the change settings on the right and then the change button on the next screen then change it to workgroup

My PC isn't on a domain. I'll just have to wait for Microsoft to work out a way to upgrade the OEM's. Which is worrying because I don't have an 'OEM' to contact for support as I didn't purchase the PC pre-built, I built it myself and had to use a OEM Windows 7 because retail copies were no longer in production.

if you look under windows update from control panel do you see a bit at the top about W10?

should look like this
