Is the 980ti making the 980 obsolete?

GTX980 is far cheaper to manufacturer than 780Ti though, smaller die, smaller memory bus, less cooling/power requirements. I suppose you could say NVidia are just reaping the rewards for R&D improvements but they have probably made insanely good profits out of it.

I think nVidia profits from PC graphics cards was down last quarter before the arrival of the Titan X (think that arrived towards end). And yes, money made on R&D improvements has to have some reward especially if it's ahead of the competition.

It's a bit like houses. If two houses are next to each other and the second one is nicer but actually cost the builder less to build than the first for whatever reason, would it be higher priced than the first, the same, or lower? I reckon as it;s a nicer house it would be priced higher regardless of how much it cost to build - as people will want the better house over the other.
Not sure if great analogy :).
But all free markets are supply and demand driven.

Funny that many of You think NV cares about lower sales of 980.. They rather keep prices and rip us off on 980 TI

980 should be £350 new max.

Nvidia & the companies selling these are taking advantage of AMD's lack of competition which is unlikely to change anytime soon.

Also known as rinsing us customers :)

£350 would be perfect for the 980. I've been without a card for about 4 months now. I was holding off on the 980 for the price drop when the 980ti came out. Now I'm getting the 980Ti. The performance boost is simply too much to pass up on. So right now, yes, the 980 is obsolete.

980 is a pointless card to buy at this stage imo.

Hardly. It is still £150 cheaper than a 980Ti.

I think £350 would be a better starting price though in the current market.

God, Nvidia really have done a blinding job of making people think £550 is a good price for a graphics card!

About 5 years ago £500-600 would have been shockingly high for a GPU, but in 2015 people think that is cheap for a high end Nvidia card!! £350 for a 980 would be a good price IMO... It would be worth upgrading my 970 to a 980 for less than £100.

You forget £400 5 years ago is more like £475 now after 5 years of high inflation and a VAT rise. The USD rate has not been the same as it was pre 2009

I'm sorry but if anyone thinks cards have gotten more expensive in the last few years havnt always bought cards in that price bracket . 8800GTX was releases @ 500 notes + , it's flited and floated very slightly but generally speaking it hasn't changed a whole lot .

IMO the only reason why most people are getting GTX 980Ti is because compared to GTX Titan X it looks to be a great deal ... eventhough it is still ridiciuosly expensive for the majority of people.
There is still £195 price difference between the cheapest GTX 980 and GTX 980Ti in Denmark.

GTX 980 hasn't really taken any considerable price dump - neither as new retail or as used card in the 2nd hand market.
It is still a great card and will be so for the next year to come... just like GTX 970

Definitely.

Some 980's are priced so close to the Ti that it makes the 980 pointless.

Honestly the 980 Ti makes 980 / Titan X irrelevant unless you need lot's of memory. That's coming from a Titan X owner lol. I like to tell it how it is :p

Actually you are right... £500 to £1000 is not a "whole lot" ... it is double the amount...
