You notice how they put the HDMI port in the same place as the 970s and 980s.

its not an AMD chip at all, Sapphire have jumped ship to the green side:eek:

The issue I have with a rebrand is the length of time it has taken.

I'm guessing that was to clear out all the old 290x stock.
If its just a rebrand or perhaps as some have suggested a refresh with GCN updated i guess we have to wait and see.

So far from what i see makes my wait for a die shrink easier

I think the rebrand issue to me is not dropping it down a traditional tier, but instead introducing a new one.
I have no issue with a 290X being rebranded as a 380. It's to be expected these days.

Also, it's worse as AMD have new cores kicking about in Tonga, yet we're going to have a mix of three different GCN revisions in the 3XX again lol.

Agreed. I don't care at all about rebrands and fair play but to rebrand a 290X as a 390X is just wrong IMO. Should be a 380 as you say.

LOL.

The silly stories aren't about Fury, though.

Could he mean the stories that are about Fury?

That Fury X not being as fast as the 980 Ti,
or that the stories that it uses 300W or more,
or that it comes in a flimsy white box,
or that it'll run really hot because it doesn't have a fan on the card as well,
or that the fan for the radiator is the loudest fan ever,
or that it'll cost the same as Titan X (Or more if it beats it),
or that 4GB HBM isn't enough..

There could be some positives here, doesn't all have to be negative.

Only two days !!!

I missed the Twitch stream, did I miss anything? Have they given release dates for Fury and 390x rebrand? Have we any specs or are they still banging on with teaser videos and that cringe worthy Fixer videos?

Even the fury isn't going to really matter tbh unless it's a lot faster than the TX and it gets a 8gb version which is under $1000. This Gen is done and Nvidia won this round, AMD needs to come out swinging fast when we get the die shrink and not give Nvidia a 6 month lead with Pascal.

I do think it's slightly strange comparing it to Nvidia though at the moment, on 28nm AMD are definitely the worst with the rebrands.

Especially if the 3XX is just a complete rebrand of the 2XX with a new tier product, the 2XX for the most part having been a rebrand of the 7XXX.

We had specs, performance, prices, full images (including the dark side never seen before and WOW! its an impressive sight) and DX12.2 demos....thats right! its .1 gen ahead of everything else.

Love how people are writing off the Fury X without knowing anything, and for NO other reason than it having a 'mere' 4GB. That said, even if benchmarks prove this doesn't matter, it will be a psychological battle that AMD have to wage aginst everyone who thinks 4GB isn't enough no matter what. And as mentioned elsewhere, if you're explaining you're not winning!

In terms of the naming schemes I suppose AMD will try and justify it by pointing out the 390 moniker will no longer be applied to the flagship series cards so that they didn't need to lower the designation. 79x0 became 280 because 290 was the new high resolution and series, the 290's can become 390's as their successors are the Fury's. It's misleading but no worse than other rebrands I suppose. I wonder whether AMD were forced into this move by high Hawaii stock levels from their relatively lacklustre sales?

I wonder what these silly stories Roy mentions are. Hopefully 4GB but doubtful sadly.

Review samples? ;)

£782 per unit is rather worrying though!

Is a shame AMD chose this naming scheme, because undedicated people (In terms of PC) might not understand at first. Although I'm sure even those guys will pick it up after launch.

For most of us here who are more informed, we can see that the flagship is in fact the Fury X and Fury Pro being the second down, meaning that the 390X is the third down, exactly the same has happened with previous generations.

I.e GTX 680 becoming GTX 770 , and HD 7970 becoming R9 280.

GTX 680 > GTX 770

GTX 780 << New flagship (At launch, before 780 Ti came along)
GTX 770

HD 7970 > R9 280X

R9 290X << New flagship
R9 290
R9 280X

R9 290X > R9 390X

Fury X << New flagship
Fury Pro
R9 390X

Maybe somebody should put out an illustration, to make it simple for the uninformed to understand.

That Fury X not being as fast as the 980 Ti,We've seen probable FM bench leaks that tally
or that the stories that it uses 300W or more, It does
or that it comes in a flimsy white box, That's unimportant
or that it'll run really hot because it doesn't have a fan on the card as well, It's a hot running card hence full cover block - no vents at rear back this
or that the fan for the radiator is the loudest fan ever,
or that it'll cost the same as Titan X (Or more if it beats it),
or that 4GB HBM isn't enough..They'll make it sound enough :p

I can't wait until the naming scheme goes.

Numbers - Fiji - Pacific - Iraq - Tuscany.

Now that's when knowing the hierarchy will get hard.
Because, a new name always happens right?

No.

What AMD and Nvidia have done is rather different from one another.

Yep that cringeworthy video of the rebrand unboxing pretty much shows how the misinformed can be completely unaware it's really a two year old chip. There are people that will literally go in to best buy, see "new" on the shelf and pick it up. Sad but true.
