I've never used HBM or even seen it action. I'm holding judgement until we actually see the cards. HBM and GDDR5 are not the same things, they may not work in the same way. I have will wait until we get more info before deciding if it's a good or bad card. I had fun with my 4GB GDDR5 980, will probably enjoy using AMD's 4GB HBM Fury X to.

1 day to go until we find out. Let's try and hold it together guys.

+1

How people can argue about tech that's not been released yet, that we have nothing to compare to is beyond me. Either AMD have a cunning plan or have some explaining to do with their shareholders.

*Maybe* they will have a new texture compression method but you will likely get 10% saving at most,

GCN 1.2 already introduced some newer compression tech, so no reason in theory why they couldn't have expanded on this.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8460/amd-radeon-r9-285-review/3

if it was possbile to squash down textures 50%-100% without impacting image quality it would have been done a long time ago when memory was at a premium.

Can't find the link now, but a recent AMD interview said something along the lines of, little or no optimisation was done in the past, as VRAM capacity was essentially free on high end cards, due to the need for a certain number of chips to make up the required Bandwidth.

Obviously with HBM bandwidth is the easy part, so makes sense that they may need to introduce some new technology to make better use of the VRAM capacity they have available.

A bit off topic (no less than half the BS fanboyism bickering in this thread) but damn, all those "Keep calm and.." are so stupid. They make no sense and just make me cringe.

I hope Fury brings something to the table because generic re-brands are so boring.

If you where filling the glass at the same rate as you where drinking, you would have infinite beer :|

Thats really not true at all, take the 970 and its 3.5GB "full speed" issue.

If you where using <=3.5GB of vram the gameplay was buttery smooth, then when you when above that mark things slowed down. That wasn't to do with not having enough vram that was indeed due to how fast you can fill / empty it.

Now if you can fill / empty the buffer quick enough when you need to swap in / out the data needed after exceeding the maximum vram you have you could still have a high FPS

That is not true at all. A 1 gallon bucket can hold 1 gallon of water, however big the hole is in the bottom it can't magically become a 2 gallon bucket.

The 970 issues is completely different because there was different architectural differences, but ti does highlight the issue of what happens when you don't have a enough memory.

Is it true?
Can it be tomorrow that all these weeks and pointless debates of Gods finally come to a decision? That it be unveiled?

Are we humans worthy?

This time tomorrow, Boomstick will make the 490X thread, and a whole new can of worms will be opened - 490X limited to 8GB VRAM - not enough for 12k resolution!

Backtrack! Backtrack!

Silent Scone logic.

TLDR.

Nvidia does rebrand =awesome even if rebrand is fighting for three years against multiple new cores including those one process node ahead.

AMD does rebrand = terribad if fighting against one single new core on the same process node.

So basically Boomstick was right.

just put him on ignore cat

The hype is real.

I'm hoping Advanced Malfunctioning Devices can blow the nVidiots away (including myself). Another noticeable performance leap above the TX/980ti will be awesome.

Am expecting not just good GPUs but I have feelings amd is up to something else..

Amd gaming Facebook hinting at future of online gaming for example..

Something unexpected is about to happen..

All this referencing to buckets and pints of beer are just dumbing down in an effort to understand a complex and new technology that very few outside of the industry understand. Lets just wait and see if it brings a better way of achieving high resolution 4k gaming or not.
