Where do they make these ratings up from then :D

Certain people/houses get boxes that record what they're watching, how many are watching etc, then they scale that up to the whole population :).

Edit:
The BARB reporting panel is 5,100 homes. The panel homes are located across the UK and represent the viewing of all individuals aged 4 and over within the household (plus their guests) and return data on a daily basis from around 11,500 people. All digital terrestrial, satellite and cable platforms are represented.

Appointing Chris Evans as the new presenter of Top Gear reminds me of Bruce Jenner.

Replacing a **** with a ****.

A welcome change in my opinion. Top Gear, for me, had gotten boring and more than a little one-dimensional. I only watched it as the photography was stunning at times. Can't imagine Clarkson had much to do with that side of things.

Wooohooo. Will start watching TG on a regular basis now. Listening and watching Jeremy Clarkson gave my eyes and ears AIDS (ok it may not have done but I couldn't stand the man)

Because Chris Evans doesnt give you aids?

He wont give you aids, he will bore you in to an early death

Does that mean we will no longer have to listen to The Stig introduced as "some say..."?

What was the final "Some Say..." anyway?

Hammond and may said no a while ago so no they won't be joining in

If I do watch, I'd be downloading the odd episode via torrent to ensure they don't get my rating, just so i can see how miserably awkward and fail it will be

Wonder who the others would be at this stage

They don't have someone sat with their ear to your door checking what you're watching, you know :D

No but it counts towards ratings if I watch it live on the TV, or live on the internet :p

Wouldnt want to give them the satisfaction, not that im going to make a difference, its principals :p

Internet yes, TV no. How would they know what you're watching?

Ahh I see how they do it

Since 1981, we at the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (BARB) have been delivering the official viewing figures for UK television audiences. We commission research companies Ipsos MORI, Kantar Media and RSMB to collect data that represent the viewing behaviour of the UK’s 26 million TV households.

BARB viewing data offer clients, such as broadcasters and advertisers, a minute by minute breakdown of viewing at regional and national levels. This information is vital for assessing how programmes, channels or advertising campaigns have performed and provides the basis for airtime advertising trading.

In order to estimate viewing patterns across all TV households, a carefully selected panel of private homes is recruited. The Establishment Survey is carried out continuously by Ipsos MORI in order to track changes in UK household characteristics. From this we can ascertain the types of households we need on our panel to make sure it is representative of the whole of the UK. We then recruit households to be on the panel that suit the necessary demographics, TV platforms and geography, as well as other variables. The BARB panel consists of 5100 households, which each represent about 5000 other households across the UK.

So they select a number of households, then gauged on what they watch, they then estimate / think the rest of the UK have the same oppinions which is where they come to these millions of views :p

I'm not sure how I feel about this. It pains me to say it, I can't (or couldn't) stand Chris Evans, but actually, his BBCR2 Radio show isn't all that bad and he certainly knows his cars, well, Ferraris.

That said, I'm not sure I could watch him. Regardless of your views or opinions on Clarkson, he made that show work and the only reason I might now watch it is actually for the cars, as long as the format doesn't change.

28th June will be a big one!

I came very late to Top Gear (S13) because I can't get passionate about bits of metal that get you from A to B but I had to watch an episode at a mates house and very quickly identified with the childishness of the 3 Presenters and became a fan of them.
I'll give Evans & Co a chance but it would be like replacing The Goodies with 3 new characters.

Seems Chris Evans is creating a niche for himself piggybacking on other people's success - Terry Wogan's Radio 2 Breakfast show, Adrian Childs on The One Show and now Clarkson on Top Gear. Needles to say, just as I stopped listening to Radio 2 in the mornings and watching The One Show on Friday's, I won't be watching new Top Gear.
