Apologies if there's been loads of similar threads recently. Potentially looking at buying a 970 with the weekly offers currently on and selling my R9 290 but not sure what manufacturer to go for.

I'd prefer less noise and heat as the 290 can get quite hot and noisy when under load.

Not very experienced with it but overclocking potential would be an added bonus. I'm not wanting to spend more than £300.

What card(s) give the best price vs performance?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The 970 be a sidegrade from a 290. I think it will be barely faster. The 390 8GB will be out tomorrow so may be worth waiting to see what performance for that is like.

A couple of hours to go till we know the 300 series prices and hopefully benchmarks. If you do go for a 970, the general consensus on the best ones are the MSI Gaming and Gigabyte G1. The MSI has a passive fan mode and is quiet on load, the G1 has slightly higher stock clocks and a backplate. Both overclock well, but there's a slightly pricier version of the MSI where the cooler is green instead of red and has a backplate. As far as coolers go, I'd only go for Asus Strix or MSI Gaming for quietness, even on an AMD R9 300 series card.

I'm hoping that the 390 is comparable in performance to a 970 at 1080p but is cheaper in price. So glad I didn't purchase a 970 last month!

I bought one yesterday and then cancelled it before dispatch. AMD were taking so long, my itchy trigger finger got impatient and hit the buy button lol

Thanks for the replies so far. I've been on the green team for years and only went to the red side as my 560 died and the 290 was on special offer but sort of regretting it and seeing this week's offer is giving me thoughts. 970s seem to be a lot more recommended and there isn't much price difference. Plus there is the regular driver updates. I'll see what the 300 specs and prices are like on release.
