Windows 10

After reading a few Windows Update 10 preview hotfixes were released, I decided to re-install build 10074 and get those hotfixes before the "slow" path Windows Update upgrade to build 10130.

Sadly, still getting same issue, a reboot loop shortly after the Windows logo appears.

I still cannot get over how some are still so entrenched with an old style work flow from last century.

I'm no longer alone in thinking that the start menu is old hat :D

After switching to Windows 8/8.1 I can't bear the thought of working on a 7 box

Anyone having trouble with the settings app staying on top after opening?

I personally believe that a lot of companies, especially tech, get caught up in innovation for the sake of innovation. Trying to create the next thing that stands out so people choose them over competitors. The old hat start menu works perfectly fine. A list of things installed and no need for tiles and bright colours. Why reinvent the wheel?

I'd like to thank people for answering the questions despite disagreeing with them rather than just dismissing it as old fashioned, though.

Although I'm happy to be converted if someone can present genuine reasons why the new tile based Tomy interface is vastly superior!

Tbh I'm unaware my work laptop (8.1) has a start screen. Press Windows key, type the first few characters of the application I want, press enter. Done.

And that's only rarely. Everything I use regularly is pinned to the task bar.

I have through misadventure ended up with a 32bit copy of Windows 7 on my laptop...
Does anyone happen to know if it will be possible to upgrade through to 64bit windows 10 naturally?

Seems I was wrong in one of my previous posts. I did'nt have build 10134, but 10130. This for me was terrible, the worst build I have used thus far. Experienced a lot of various issues, that just became annoying after a while. I now have build 10134 and things seem to be working, as you would expect. No issues, so far.
One thing I have noticed and maybe someone can correct me, if I'm wrong. I use Outlook for my mail and is a lot more responsive now than in the previous build. The only issue I have is( this is where I may be missing something), is the ability to select all items in the Trash/Deleted folders to remove in one go. At present, I am having to delete all items, one at a time. Which, as you can imagine, is annoying.
But aside from the mail issue, all else seems to be fine.
I'm using this build on my main gaming system and games are running great, no more problems with the Nvidia driver.

I don't see why they can't just have a PROPER start menu again. Whats their problem? I can see I will be forced to use classic shell again.

Windows 10 looked promising. It has a start button, you open it and it's a start menu, but..trololol it's METRO, only smaller.

ill be using classic shell on W10 when I upgrade to it, don't like the current start menu

Can't say I miss the start menu at all in Win 8. Tbh I find it a lot better without it and have not had any issues with it not being there.

You get used to what you get used to. I'm quite happily using Windows 10 for my personal stuff, but have Win 7 on my work machines as I'm so used to the layout I can just get things done. I'll change my habits when I haven't got eleventy billion other things to do that are more important.

Have you used it? Theres a column of commonly used applications, and then when you click 'all apps' it turns into a vertically scrolling list of all the applications you have installed.

It's the Windows 7 start menu with tiles bolted to the side. Sure its not perfect and the size and spacing is far to big, but to say 'its just metro, only smaller' is way off the mark.

What on earth is it people are doing on their PCs meaning they spend so much time trying to work out how to use a start menu? Pin the apps to the task bar or desktop if need be... I can't believe people spend so much time trying to work out how to launch an app. :)

I don't think I actually use the Startbar much any more. I pin the programs I use daily and the rest I hit the windows key and then just type the program I am looking for and Win 8.1 does the rest for me, used to do the same in 7 and Vista.

Presume you got the iso from somewhere for build 10134? It has not been released by Microsoft via updates?

I've been tryign to read up on Win10 as much as i can but there's a lot of info to get through.

Does it still use Windows 8's terrible terrible interface? I cant handle the whole setup, really. Im still on Windows 7 because I like the classic start bar and draggable windows set up. My GF's win8 laptop drives me insane when i try to do.. well anything.

I guess what im after is a better Windows 7, in much the same way that Win7 was a better Vista. Essentially everythign the same, but better.

Not as good as the Windows 7 experience, but miles better than 8.x. Try it out in a virtual machine. A lot of the Windows 10 bloat can be hidden.

titles are more easier to see/read/click on. well for me anyway

the start screen uses titles. do u mean u don't use metro apps?
No, I mean I don't use the start menu I use the start screen.

it's all about preference...

Computer usage has changed a lot with the creation of apps (thanks to Google and Apple, mainly) and most average users seem to have adapted well to this, after all, most people want something they can turn on and use:D
