Windows 10

What on earth is it people are doing on their PCs meaning they spend so much time trying to work out how to use a start menu? Pin the apps to the task bar or desktop if need be... I can't believe people spend so much time trying to work out how to launch an app. :)

I don't like a messy or clutter task bar or desktop, i like mine very clean and clear. so a start menu is quick and easy to use.

I ended up using this start menu on windows 10

Seems to work similar to windows 7 start menu.

On the flip side however, the W10 touch interface seems to be a major step back from what has evolved into actually a pretty slick (all be it rather useless with the massive lack of apps) user experience in 8.1.

I actually think im going to hold off upgrading my Stream 7 tablet.

I have a feeling that getting this upgrade to work on my fathers desktop is going to be easier then getting it to work on my laptop since he had it on today and I checked the installed updates (windows update was requesting a restart to complete installing updates) and the second update required to get the windows 10 upgrade was showing as pending restart instead of complete, so the next restart is likely to bring up the upgrade icon in the system tray.

Well, I can only hope.

I've had a hunt through the past pages but can't find my question asked and answered:

I have Windows 7 and reserved Windows 10, will I be able to upgrade and leave all my applications in tact or will I need to reinstall them and reinstate all the data (photos, music etc)?

Ill have a go at this one and then see if i get it right:

When you upgrade, it will just be like a windows update which will replace the OS but leave all your stuff intact.
If you do that then your key is marked as a w10 key too and then you can clean install with the same key and carry on with the same w10 license.

Was that right? :p

Q: What happens if I change the hardware configuration of my Windows 10 device?

A: If the hardware configuration of your Windows 10 device changes significantly (e.g. motherboard change) Windows may require re-activation on the device. This is the same experience as prior versions of Windows (e.g. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1). The free upgrade offer will not apply to activation of Windows 10 in such scenarios where hardware changes reset Activation.

doesn't look good.

I personally believe that a lot of companies, especially tech, get caught up in innovation for the sake of innovation. Trying to create the next thing that stands out so people choose them over competitors. The old hat start menu works perfectly fine. A list of things installed and no need for tiles and bright colours. Why reinvent the wheel?

I'd like to thank people for answering the questions despite disagreeing with them rather than just dismissing it as old fashioned, though.

Although I'm happy to be converted if someone can present genuine reasons why the new tile based Tomy interface is vastly superior!

I'm not saying tiles is it but going back to what worked in the last century is not the future.

doesn't look good.

I see two people wanting further clarification to that.

seems to be just clarification of the term " free for the life of the device" to me...

seems fair.

The device could die and then you've wasted an old retail licence. Don't like the thought of wasting my Windows 7 key with no future. At least at the moment I've transferred Windows 7 to 3 different motherboards since 2009.

This one has legs, a lot more have replied including myself. They haven't answered the Retail licence question. And I'm not sure about the licence being 'consumed' in the upgrade. I'd hope the 7/8.1 licence remains valid after the upgrade. Otherwise upgrading a Retail licence is a one time deal (once it falls outside the upgrade cut off date) converting it into an OEM and that's not on.

I've gone back to 8.1 for the meantime, been running 10 for the last month or so as it's fantastic, unfortunately I was stuck in a update cycle each time I rebooted in which I had to revert updates each time. Didn't want to waste the time to fix, so just loaded an 8.1 image.

i think they have said you'll be able to go back to your previous OS if you want

anyway if it turns out that the free upgrade can't be transferable then i'll just buy win10

It's a mute point really because we all know you can re-activate multiple times over different key components...

Microsoft have said the " windows would be free for the life of the device".

I have also used windows 8 across multiple devices, ( albeit at different times) and never had problems reactivating, couldn't imagine it being any different this time around.

I imagine you'll be able to activate Windows 10 on different devices or key components, such as motherboards, whether it's legally withing the terms of the licence is another matter...;)

Either way I'm hoping for a promotional offer of Windows 10 just like they did with Windows 8.

I have Windows 8 (non-Pro) key and Windows 8 pro, I'll upgrade both to Windows 10, but I may need to buy "Pro" key as well, but we'll see..
