New law!! for music cd/dvd owned, you're no longer allowed to copy songs for private use

I have always moved over my favorite music to my pc to listen to instead of pulling out the mass of cd's looking for the right tune and now that's illegal!

Actually it has always been illegal in the UK, the new law to legalise it only came in last year (but has now been found unlawful, hence this reversal).

Where is there logic in this? Where is there proof that it would cause financial harm to there industry, after all this time how can they seriously provide legitimate evidence to that conclusion.

I mean hardly any people buy CDs anymore.

That's the difference between criminal and civil illegality.

Yeah it's also the difference between illegal and unlawful, illegal is both against the law and a criminal act, unlawful is just against the law so won't result in criminal prosecution but can result in civil action (I.E Trademark infringement.

He probably has his opinion ignored because he tells people not to believe it in his post :p.

The fact that they want a tax applied to HDDs and USB sticks is disgusting, I don't want to be forced to give money to a bunch of terrible companies when I don't use any of their products :/.

I like that it's now both on legal and evolutionary matters you can post an informed opinion and have it ignored. I admire the persistence though, have you always thought of yourself as a masochist? :p

As for illegal and unlawful, there is a bit of an overlap in my mind. Illegal has strong conotations of criminality, but could merely refer to a breach of rights imposed by the state (even civil rights). Unlawful means acting in a manner in breach of another's rights, including rights imposed by the state. In my choose of language, I only use illegal when there are actions that could invoke criminal penalties. So before the 2014 amendments discussed in my original post, ripping CDs (in a personal, non profiteering sense) would be properly described as unlawful.

Illegal has no connotations, it simply means it's against the law.

Unlawful means something isn't illegal, but isn't supported by law.
