Ever get bashed by people for being 'techy'?

A girl im getting involved with at the moment, asked to come over the yesterday and was amazed by the technology in my room but she was actually interested in it and was asking me questions and stuff, never experienced anything like it.

She sounds like a keeper. :D

"Getting involved with" - What does that mean exactly? One night stand? Pump and dump? :D :D :D :D :D

Wait until you get a girlfriend..... it gets worse

No, no it doesn't, unless you settle for a troggo that makes fun of you for the things you enjoy doing.

Never had a problem with any Ex girlfriends with any of that sort of stuff, mainly because it wasn't all the time, and understood it was a hobby or past time.

Past time? It's all about the present!

Good, good. Now try and get her to play some vidya games and you're good to go.

Do any of you guys have/had this issue, and how did you deal with it?

I say it's better than being down the pub drinking and doing who knows what. At least they know where I am. I say it's a hobby like any other, so whether I'm spending my money on hardware, cars, hi-fi, movies or expensive restaurants doesn't matter, because people spend their money on their hobbies, no matter what it is.

You can't convince them that what you do is worthwhile (though you're always the person they call when they can't get something working), so don't bother. All you can do is say it's the same as some other mainstream hobby that they can relate to. Point at their own hobby and say "it's the same as that is for you".

Luckily my wife, whilst not a true geek does have more gadgets than me. She asked me why that was, and I told her that because I actually understood the stuff, I knew not to bother with things that were useless or meaningless to me, to ignore the fads and fashions for gadgets that I'm not interested in.

Q.F.T.

It is quite worrying that as a society we see spending your life getting battered and slowly destroying your liver as a more desirable trait than taking an interest in things the some of best minds have invented.

She did ask to play so i put her on Cod as it's pretty easy.. Lets just say, shes really bad.

Well.. I'm not quite sure yet. I haven't actually slept with her.. Much to my disappointment :(

Hi all,

Thought I would come here to vent a little, and ask if you guys constantly get bashed by people and family members for being techy?

Since I was in school, I have always been a hardware fan so isn't something new at all.

This weekend has been exceptionally awful, worse than recent ones and every single time I get told that I shouldn't be buying watercooling stuff, shouldn't play games, shouldn't well get anything techy.

I mean, I cannot see the issue the family has with this.
I have always took it on the chin, but now every single day being told the same stuff, even on the phone is really starting to grind on me.

I'm full time employed, always trying my very best, and progressing forward when i'm at work, but when I get home it appears to be all wrong to wind down on the PC, or upgrade some bits for an hour or two. The thing which gets me, it isn't everyday either! maybe two to three times a week, including weekends!

Do any of you guys have/had this issue, and how did you deal with it?

Right now, I really want to hurt them back, but to be fair it isn't me and want to be the better person about it.

I think you need to get out more tbh

I've always been peoples personal tech support help line every time something minor happens, I've not been made fun of much for it just more along the lines of you sort a problem for them one time and you're free tech support for life and if you don't sort it for them you're a ****. I've also had the comments that I'm an idiot for spending £1000 on a new build every 4-5 years, yet I point out that they took out a £1000 loan to take their family on a long weekend to Skegness yet that's some how acceptable for them to take out debt they can't afford to go on a weekend break they don't need.

I don't mind helping close family such as my parents, but it's when you help someone out one time and then you're their personal go to for everything tech related and they give out your details to their entire extended family expecting it done for free any night of the week. These days I say no if it's someone I don't know such as friend of a family member, for people who aren't close family I will charge them for it and they either pay one time and never ask again or they tell you not to bother :) Somehow that makes me a dick for not fixing it for free like I do my mother, but why should I waste 4+ hours of my time formatting their PC to get rid of the 100's of viruses just because they're too stupid to not download and install them in the first place.

The good thing is I no longer get asked anywhere near as much, these days they can take it to a computer store for all I care and pay £80 to not have their PC for 2 weeks.

I don't seem to have any issues being a "techy" person.

this maybe because I always help out family and friends with any issues, if they started giving me crap for being "techy" I would tell them where to go and they can go pay someone to sort out their issues.

I know what you mean. I never understood how some people can sit there and mindlessly watch TV every evening on some sort of routine (just a typical example, don't know if it happens to you personally), but then complain at other people for doing something "foreign" to them, e.g. doing tech-related things (hardware or software wise). That just seems boring to me.

Crank out the bdsm gear and see if she shows the same enthusiasm, if so stick a collar on her before someone else does :p

Boom on point, they are happy to sit in front of the TV all day long. Doesn't do it for me.

Try Unreal Tournament '99 if you have it, with the bots set to ridiculously easy. :)

With being a geek, I can't offer any advice on the pork swordsmanship aspects of your relationship :p
