Is New York too much for a "weekend break"

I spent a week in NY.
Flights were a killer, had me jet lagged for days lol.

You need at least 4 days to cram in a good itinerarys Worth.

4 nights is a good number for NY. Gives you time to do a mix of stuff and the jet lag for me isn't that bad. San Fran on the other hand....

New York for 2 days is a very bad idea.

I've been twice; first time was for 5 nights then went on to Boston for 3 nights and the second time I went for 6 nights. Despite spending 11 nights in New York total I still want to go back a third time as there's things I didn't get round to doing.

Factor in all of the travel as well, as it's not just a long flight.

Getting to the airport (don't know where you live but let's say 1hour away)
Checking in etc and waiting around at the airport - 2.5 hours
Flight - 6.5 hours
U.S. Customs and getting through airport - 1 hour
Taxi to Manhattan - 45 mins with a bit of traffic

That's just shy of 12 hours x 2

Then factor in travel time actually getting to where you want to visit in Manhattan (taxis/ walking/ subway).

If you're not like lord YOLO up there, go for a European city. I drove to Bruges for a weekend and it worked out fairly cheap. £50 on fuel, £60 for ferry crossing and £250 for a nice room in a 4 star hotel in the middle of Bruges. Had a really nice time.

You could even bring some immigrants back with you for a fee probably making a profit.

I'd do it for 3 days, why not? You'd cram a load in. Would you do it all? No, but it would be a really nice surprise for the Mrs.

side note: I so wish I could go on a concord. What an experience that would have been.

I've been to New York 4 times and I've never go for less than 4 days. The travel day can be a really long one, especially if you get an early flight. Our earlier flight on one trip was 8am, which meant getting up to around 3:30am to get picked up at 4am to get to the airport for 5am. With the time difference and the 7 hour flight it becomes such a long day, especially if you don't manage to sleep on the flight (which I never can). We never get much done that travel day except some basic sightseeing around the hotel and getting some food. 4 days is needed really to give you enough time to see the best bits while not being absolutely shattered the entire time.

Really depends on your fondness for flying. I won't go to America for anything less than a week. But I have a colleague that flies somewhere pactically every weekend. Though I think even he extends his trips to America to at least a long weekend.

I have gone to NY for the weekend several times also

We're going to NY over Christmas to see family, we are out there for 2 weeks, I haven't been before so wouldn't know what to suggest on the actual NY stuff.

IMHO best thing to do is find what sort of things you want to do or see and then decide where to go from there, perhaps somewhere to the right rather than left could mean upping a class and then flying in a bit more comfort perhaps so you dont feel too crappy when you land?
Out of the places I have been in the last few years I'd say Sri Lanka's quite nice..

I've done NY leaving thursday night and leaving v.early Monday morning. That was quite agreeable. Any less might be a pushing it a bit IMO.

Depends where you live and where you fly from. If you've got the money (or the air miles), flying from City with BA reduces the faff considerably.

I do NY for business a fair amount, refuse to do it for less than 3 days (there) which means it's a full working week by the time you account for travel.

Love the city though, I always try and get some sight seeing in while I'm there and want to go back for a purely personal visit sometime soon. Wouldn't do it for a weekend though

I was looking at new York for the wife's birthday weekend this year, but for 5 nights.
After a bit of thought gave up on the idea as I don't think it was enough time counting the flight time etc.
Ended up booking 5 nights in Rome in September, :D
