iPad 1st gen crashing

Yeah mine did the same before I got rid of it a few months back. I think unfortunately its just past its sell by date.

Its not had updates for quite some time since it was deemed to be too old. May be worth looked at replacing.

I need tablet only for reading and web browsing. It would be sufficient but crashing ruin it. I would be good, if there is way around it.

Totally understand, but mine had been crashing for some time, I had wiped it, factory settings etc.....but alas it made little difference. I think it was just due to the age of the thing and the fact it hadn't been updated for a long time that eventually, for me anyway, made it unusable.

I had definitely had my moneys worth though to be fair, got it on launch day and sold it on just a month or so ago!

Had this problem with my iPhone 4. Like antc said, after a certain point you just have to give up on it. Whether you want to be cynical and talk about built in obsolescence or not I don't know. You can get a mini for next to nothing now though, I'd look into that

Yeah thats what I got as a replacement, a mini 2. Great machine, lightning fast and actually I think I now prefer the smaller size and I love the retina screen.

Problem with mini is that it is too small. I read technical books, with lot of charts, diagrams and figures. Truth to be told sometimes I have to zoom even on this device. Only reason I pick iPad is 4:3 screen. I definitely not gonna buy another apple device. Can someone tell me how is reading different on 10.1" devices with 16:9 screen aspect ratio?

The iPad 1 suffered from a lack of RAM. The browser eats up a lot of memory and eventually falls over.

If you don't want to replace the iPad, I would suggest making sure that you only have one browser tab open at a time.

The iPad 1 shares the same hardware as the forth gen iPod touch down to the 256MB RAM (the iPhone 4 has 512MB RAM) and my iPod touch is also suffering from crashing in apps and occasionally in browsing (even with one tab running), but I know at least if the browser is going to fall over and crash (stuttering when scrolling and the page not rendering quickly enough when scrolling) so I know when to kill the page to stop the browser crashing.

If you're not getting any crashing when reading your technical manuals and the battery is still going strong then just use it for that and get a replacement for everything else.

There was a thread on here about modding the iPad 1 to run better. I never got round to trying it though as I bought an Air 2.

Someone in the family has an old iPad1 and its a pain to browse on with all the crashing. I don't think its just the ram as many seem to suggest it got worse with the last update.

Thank you all for your advices and informations. I just sold the iPad, so no more Apple for me. Do you think, that lenovo miix 3 10 is gonna be good replacement?

Even my iPad Air crashes Chrome when I'm doing doing browsing that uses a lot of RAM (for example browsing Imgur).

It's simply a lack of RAM, and web pages are becoming more and more complex with their memory requirements, so it's unsurprising that the early iPads with very little memory are struggling.

Having played with a number of Android tablets too (and owning an Android phone), I have an iPad because in my opinion, it's the best tablet out there.
