British Gas Smart Meters.

That isn't the case either, they are little different to other energy monitors for that function. Moving supplier, isn't going to stop your display giving you energy usage.

Glaucus, having the smart meter won't prevent you changing supplier, what I meant was that not all smart meters are compatible with all suppliers. Which means you'll no longer get usage info and the fancy monitor gadget will become a useless door stop. Until all suppliers use the same meters/standards.

Which is exactly what is currently happening. Things are in motion, 100%. ;)

All signed off and agreed to one standard and it's more than begun.

not only that they can cut you off remotely with those new smart meters. plus the ability to load limit.Energy suppliers have committed not to use load limiting without notifying Consumer Focus and Ofgem

cant see any info in your links about limiting use etc.

also no energy company would touch that with a 10ft barge pole.

"oh hey demand was high so we reduced your power"

"yeah my husbands ventilator got cut off and he's dead, just how many years is corporate man slaughter worth again?"

You CANNOT be remotely cut off if you have a smart meter. The only times you will be cut off is if in prepay mode you run out of credit or go past your emergency limit. The number of people calling us asking to 'turn their electric and gas on' is crazy. We can't do that, it'll be off for a reason. Either supplies are out of credit, trip switches are off or the gas is capped, none of which we have control over.

Anyone with a dependancy such as oxygen concentrators goes on the priority services register to ensure disconnection does not happen as their life could literally depend on it. In those circumstances they would be in credit mode anyway to ensure 100% connection time.

Technically you can be, and also load limited, although as you say the suppliers won't knowingly do this,

However when you've got that capability with an internet connection you're relying on the security protocols in place both on the meter itself and on the suppliers end as well. No Thanks, I prefer the security of not being connected to the internet in the first place.

As for the benefits? For me personally I live alone, yeah I could use less electricity but I know exactly what's on and I have no inclination to turn it off.

Unfortunately I've just bought a house and it's on a pre-pay meter (and economy 7 tariff without the storage heaters), I want to move off that but am worried that when I get around to calling British Gas it's going to be a case of smart meter or nothing :(

Load limited? Do you mean a usage limit or top-up limit? The capability may be there but in reality it won't ever happen. There is always a reason for disconnection and it won't be the supplier turning it off for a laugh.

They run using GPRS, not wifi or 3/4g or anything to do with an internet connection.

You have e7 bot not storage heaters? That's rare. If it's with BG at the moment it may be worth switching anyway as they're nowhere near the cheapest but generally those that do run on smart meters are cheaper as they require a lot less faffing around. I think BG use what are known as NSS meters (Non-Smet Smart), theirs aren't very good.

I have a 3 phase smart meter in my unit, and was told by scottish power they cannot use the smart function on it to bill me monthly as 'only the people who first install it can read it'. We cannot use it. So i have to read it myself and pass the meter reading on to them. Which surely defeats the point of having one. Do you havd a source or link to which i can beat them over the head with?

I was last with haven power and they actually charge a higher standing charge for having a smart meter!

No comms maybe, we have this issue when installing sometimes but 1 in 100 installations have this. The main hub can't communicate with the meter and send information back to the supplier so you end up having to do it yourself. One of the downsides of having one i guess.

Loving el daza's faith in the infallible system he works for, I've had countless problems with utilities in the past and after hours on the phone and letters exchanged every issue has been sorted out in my favour. There is a huge backlash in the USA because of problems caused by new meters, why we're spending billions on untried crap tech at this moment is just more stupidity from the deep state.

If you have a mobile phone, it probably emits the same amount of radiation as the smart mete. Yet a lot of people hold mobile phones to their heads with no objections, while worrying about their smart meter which is usually outside.

The smart meters blast out every 15 seconds, I barely talk on my phone for that long every day.

I know how they work. Nobody is claiming they're perfect, they're new technology after all and anything that uses remote signals is prone to problems. Even today people have issues with a mobile phone signal, how long have they been around for? Bet you have one of those though ;)
