I don't imagine I would buy one. But on auto trader there are a number of these 2014 very low milage for £50k.

Now I'm in a position to be able to buy one with out credit. But was wondering what the expected cost of ownership would be for around 5 years. Are there any online calculators for this?

I don't care about fuel costs. But depreciation would have to for part of the cost. I would do under 6k miles per year.

Maybe it's a mid life crisis but my 260ish bhp mondeo is feeling boring.

How many miles?

I'm thinking circa 50k-60k including depreciation. Mad if you ask me, but if you want an M5 fill your boots.

You don't need to get an M5 to step up from your boring Ford Mondeo......£50k buys you a HUGE amount of fun with FAR LESS ownership costs compared to an M5.

As lovely as M5s are, they are focused at a specific market - hence their cost. It's not something you pick because it's a step up from a Mondeo, it's something you pick because you WANT an M5 and all of the things it offers. I.E a luxury 'barge' with mental performance.

Go look at all the other things £50k buys you, hell...even things £30k buys you brand new......an M5 will soon seem like a bad idea unless you REALLY want an M5. A 2014 M5 still has the running costs of a brand new M5.....

If it's the experience your after, bag an e60 with a warranty from BMW for a lot less money yet most of the experience?

Hmm some fair points.

6k miles per year.don't care about fuel costs or ved.

What I'm looking for:
Large - I have a family of 4 and a dog.
Fast - If my mondeo does 0 to 60 in just over 6 seconds, I'd want something a fair bit quicker. So say under 5 seconds.
Automatic - Always had Manual, fancy something lazier.

Please don't send too much time considering, it's probably just a moment of madness.

Large, fast, and automatic...... Doesn't really narrow it down much. Range Rover 5.0 SC?
My money would go on a Jag XJ 5.0 Supercharged if it needs to be a saloon.

Buy a 5.7 V8 Hemi 300C for a fraction of the cost
Drive around scaring small animals and causing heart attacks
???
Profit

edit: Just realised it doesn't fulfil the 'speed' requirement...

editedit: not a serious post, do not take it as such.

E63 M6.

Use the extra money for warranty, maintenance, etc. and then have a massive grin on your face every single day with that utterly perfect sound. Sorted.

RS6 Avant? Easily get four in with a dog, auto box, four wheel drive for the winter fun and fast.

Is the ownership cost of an older rs6 going to be that much cheaper?

E63 M6 looks fun but not praticle for the family. If I was single I'd probably get one.

Excuse my ignorance but I'm still trying to understand why the cost of the m5 will be so much. I guess coming from super cheap ford land I don't have a clue!

This should never be brought up as a suggestion. Ever.

- Depreciation (£4k-£5k per year), so thats £20k-£25k.
- Warranty? £1.5k x 5 = £7.5k

Consumables (assuming warranty covers anything going bang) @ 30,000 miles travelled:
- servicing every 10,000 miles? 3 x £1k
- 4 rear tyres and 2 front? They must be £250+ a corner? 6 x £250 £1.5k
- a set of brake pads at front? They must be £250+? £250

... That's already £30k+ and doesn't include non-serviceable items, rear pads if needed, perhaps discs and any other petty items where a claim isn't valid or worth pursuing

Yeah... I'd say at least £8k a year to roll in an M5.

Just rent one?

£27,502.80 for 3 years or £9,167.90 per year for a brand new one. Excluding tyres etc of course but you might not burn through as many tyres/pads etc as they'll be new or need a service within a handful of miles.

Probably cheaper options out there too.

Worked for us.

Edit: small dog, but still...

To be fair, if you can handle a dog in an M5, you can handle it in an M6. It's not like the interior/boot spaces are VASTLY different. The only way it would make a difference is if the OP opted for an older touring M5 or a non M touring boot space wise. If I needed to take a dog everywhere, I'd rather it in a touring boot than back seat of a sedan.

If your dog is too big for an M6, surely it's going to be too big for an M5 non-touring also? Sure you get the 4 doors on the M5 which helps practicality, but neither an M5 nor an M6 is a family+dog wagon...going to have to compromise somewhere.

You pay 50K for an M5 today, you will have 15K car in 5 years. It will be the old model, expensive to insure and warranty and starting to attract the generation 3 owners with all that entails. I think you can add circa 10K in fuel and another 5K in annual serving and a set of tyres. If you add in a warranty too then you are what maybe another 4K over the cars life, assuming it arrives with one. OP I think you need to consider fuel. I put circa 26-28K of fuel in my RS4 in 4 years, that needs to be accounted for, though to be fair I did stick over 100K on it.

If you're happy to write off your 50K then it's no problem. If not, then I'd come up with a plan B. I missed the mileage in my original post due to not reading properly. :)
