Windows 10

Quick Q guys, if I install windows 10 via the upgrade, what then happens to my liscense?
If I ever need to reinstall what media do I use? Do I just install 8.1 from my disc use my key then upgrade again or do I get a new license key which I can use with a copy of windows 10 made on a disc?

you won't get a new key

from the information we've got so far is once you upgrade you will then be able to clean install via win10 iso, you won't need to enter any keys. once it's installed, it checks the activation server to see if your hardware ID is in the database, if it is then it activates automatically.. hence why they say you can reinstall w10 on the same device, / "it's for life of the device"...

your previous license is untouched, u can go back to win8.1 at any time

So if you intend to upgrade... don't blow the upgrade now. I have to say that really sucks compared to Win 7/8/8.1

Not really, they weren't free.

Most people will just get a free upgrade to 10 as most people are using OEM Windows. For those few people with retail you get a free upgrade to 10 for one device. Seems pretty good to me.

Microsoft has updated Q&A for Windows 10: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq

Interesting in this one below:

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading?

Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

I am getting the feeling that we are seeing the same, or very similar questions, asked on here over and over again now, and it is clearly apparent that some folk can't even be bothered to read back through a few of the preceding posts first.... and this isn't even the GD thread either! :)

Its a hardware forum people ask questions, you don't need to answer them if they have not read the thread but that doesn't mean they cant ask anyway.

What about different Solid State?

it'll be like as it now..

for example, if you change from IDE mode to SATA AHCI mode or RAID mode, that trigger a reactivation. if you change more than 3 things (I.E cpu / ram / hdd's) that trigger a reactivation. if you change your motherboard that'll trigger a reactivation...

all theses that trigger a reactivation won't be able to continue to use to free upgrade.

Plus it doesn't help that MS themselves haven't got the message across about Windows 10 and certain features.

Exactly... so posting smart ass **** like that doesn't help anyone.

My main thing is right now if I do upgrade a bunch of new hardware and it invalidates my licence I can go and speak to someone on the online help desk and explain that I am a builder and they will fix that for me.

I have done this in the past, I was just curious how id explain to them if I change hardware on the system and this happens when I have the windows 10 upgrade.

im 99% sure u won't able to with the free upgrade, because once the hardware ID as changed they'll class it as a different/changed device

hence why they saying this
Q: What happens if I change the hardware configuration of my Windows 10 device?

A: If the hardware configuration of your Windows 10 device changes significantly (e.g. motherboard change) Windows may require re-activation on the device. This is the same experience as prior versions of Windows (e.g. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1). The free upgrade offer will not apply to activation of Windows 10 in such scenarios where hardware changes reset Activation.

I am referring to being able to move the OS from one machine to another. Of course I paid for the original. I won't like be getting Win10 if I can't do that, I'll probably hold out till I upgrade my motherboard etc.

From what it looks like, you will be able to carry on moving the retail 7 or 8.1 license around, but only get a free upgrade to 10 on one device.
