Landlord charging the full cost of a replacement mattress, do I have a leg to stand on?

Moved out of a private student flat/halls type deal about a month ago, had an email about a room inspection today and they want to keep some of my deposit to pay for a replacement mattress because of this really quite minor mark. Now i'm pretty sure this was there before i was since i was using a mattress protector the whole time, but i have no way of proving that (take pictures when you move in, kids!). My question is, would it be unreasonable of me to dispute this charge?*If they want to replace the mattress that's their prerogative, but i don't feel that i should have to pay more than £15-35 at most, or about as much as it would cost for a spot clean.

Dispute it. Your deposit will be held by a tenancy deposit scheme if you're in Scotland or England (unless you're a lodger/he's a live in landlord). If it's NOT in one of these schemes then you'll potentially be liable to receive 3 times your deposit!

Anyway, assuming it is, it will be up to the tenancy deposit scheme to arbitrate and settle.

Some letting agencies replace mattresses for each client as standard as I've seen.

More likely to occur if they believe them to be biologically stained :D. But I would argue if this is the case then it would come under standard wear & tear.

Did you complete an inventory? Does it specifically state the mattress is in perfect condition? Do they have photo's of it in perfect condition before your arrival? If not, dispute it, surely the onus is on them to prove the condition of the mattress before your arrival.

They have a picture of what looks like a ***** stain on a bed mattress. The OP tells us it isn't his Jizz, but he has no picture to show it was there when he moved in and he slept on a Jizzy mattress for a year.

I can understand the OP not wanting to pay full cost for a single blast. It isn't a massive leap to suggest the mattress can't be cleaned if doused in biological, therefore they are asking for full mattress replacement. I would actually like to see who the deposit people side with in this case.
